Someone like my mum who was a lovely cook, really tasty with nice grave YUM

Dh does cook a little bit but not much, ds hates cooking and I've done most of the cooking for ever

I've got no other family and I dream of going to my mums/aunties/MIL/sisters/brothers etc for dinner, just the once..... I never have, not since mum got old about 20 years ago

I don't have the money for a carvery place either and I imagine most places have watery gravy and soggy roasties, I don't eat out that much that I know decent places to go to

I might go to IKEA later and get meatballs but it's not the same as going to your mums

M&S roast is the way forward. All ready prepped and shove it in the oven. Brilliant.

EvaHarknessRose · 10/03/2019 17:27

It’s not about going out, its about someone in your home cooking something lovely for you. When you do most of it.

I do get a roast cooked by ddad or mil sometimes.

I can’t remember the last time someone cooked me a roast! We have one every Sunday but as a single Mum it’s me who cooks it AND washes up. Kind of detracts from the yumminess of it!

recrudescence · 10/03/2019 18:26

I’m a good cook but my husband is brilliant at doing roasts - I think you have to be very hot on the timings to get it all ready just so. Being cooked Sunday lunch is, I agree, one of the nicest things. I’m also a big fan of the Toby carvery and I really like their gravy but it’s never quite as good as being at home.

I cooked the roast today for me, dp, ads1 and ads2, ddil and 2 dgc. Chicken, pork, roasties, mash, broccoli, peas, carrots Yorkies and gravy! Followed by apple crumble and cream. (It doesn't happen often!) Tomorrow is the clearing up operation!!!

Have just had my roast, courtesy of M&S, it was nice ish but not a patch on mums

Oh yes! My Mum made the most delicious Yorkshire pudding in the world. We used to have it with gravy, before the roast beef and vegetables.

Being on my own now, I only occasionally cook a roast for myself, but I do miss those Sunday roasts of childhood.

ssd · 10/03/2019 18:40

Actually haven't had mums gravy for around 20 years and there's never been anyone to replace her

Sounds like you need some nurturing rather than a actual a Sunday dinner OP. Is there a reason why you particularly miss your mum ATM?

BoomTish · 10/03/2019 19:06

SSD, do you still have your mum? Sorry if I picked up your posts wrong, but I read it that she’s elderly and unable to cook like she used to?

My mother was never a great cook, but she’s too infirm now to even try. She still makes a mean milky coffee Grin
When we visit, we usually take her out for Sunday dinner which is lovely, but doesn’t happen often enough.

I do love a roast. There’s just me and DH at home so it’s not really worth the hassle just for two people, so don’t do it often. A local pub does an amazing Sunday roast though, so we head there when the craving gets too much. Would prefer to have it at home in my yoga pants, though!

ds hates cooking

So what? I hate doing laundry but I still do it because I love my family. I am a SAHM Grin

I think you should tell your Dh and Ds to cook together and master the roast dinner. They have a couple of weekends to perfect it for Mother's Day Wink

My mum died over 6 years ago now.

Sorry for the confusion.

Yes I do need some nurturing. It's a long story. Some how the gravy signifies so much to me.

No, I’m sorry for picking you up wrong.

It sounds like you miss her very much Flowers

ssd · 10/03/2019 20:07

Yes I do. Thanks for the flowers.

Thanks. Don't be so nice to me, I'll cry Blush

As a bonus I get to eat the tasty bits while plating dinners up. I managed 4 small roasties (the crispiest ones) and the chicken oysters while doing this yesterday. Blush we hardly have a roast though.
