AIBU - Second hand soft toys

My partners family has a hoard of soft toys from when my partner was young. They are old and tatty looking and some of them were in the loft and I don't want them near my 18mo baby... AIBU if I say something? No one else seems to have a problem with it and I do have a bit of OCD when it comes to germs etc

Can you put them through the washing machine?

WildHeartsCantBeBroken · 09/03/2019 23:27

Yes the ones that don't have batteries but not sure about the others... is it rude to ask them to wash them though?

Just wash them. But honestly, they won't do your baby any harm.

I don't have germ problems but I am always a bit shy of second hand toys. Machine wash or hand wash would be the appropriate thing to do with toys that have been in storage for years. Babies chew things, its a sensible precaution.

I have passed loads of mine down to my DD, some of which had been in the loft. Put the ones you can in the washing machine, surface wash the others with a water down anti-bacterial wash they will be fine.

AFAIK most germs would not survive many years in loft. I think passed down loved toys through family is nice.
If most will go in wash then it's problem solved.

sirmione16 · 09/03/2019 23:43

Dust them off, then steam clean them

GreenTulips · 09/03/2019 23:43

Put them in your own loft

Baby doesn’t have to play with them

OneStepSideways · 10/03/2019 06:36

I'd bin them as soft toys can harbour mould deep inside where you can't see it. Washing doesn't get rid of mould. And they'll be full of dust!

AuntMarch · 10/03/2019 06:51

I would be surprised if you had to suggest them being washed, I'd clean anything that had been in the loft years before using it.
They'll smell musty otherwise!

I probably still wouldn't want them though, I'm not a big soft toy fan and don't understand why you'd keep more than a favourite comforter toy perhaps.

catx1606 · 10/03/2019 07:56

No one "has a bit of OCD" about some thing. You are a little obsessed with germs. I know you probably mean it in a light-hearted way but take it from someone who genuinely suffers from the condition, being a little obsessed with germs isn't having OCD. I just get irritated by people using the term about a condition which can ruin people's lives. It's like saying you're a bit depressed after having a few bad days.

I am happy with second hand for most things (hard furniture, books, plastic or written toys etc) but I wouldn't have any hand soft toys. You are not unreasonable to say no to these.
