AIBU to ask if you’ve had one ovary removed? Recovery time?

NC Smile
I’m due to have an ovary and Fallopian tube removed soon, laparoscopic surgery. I’m hearing loads of contradicting info about recovery times (I’d guessed 1-2 weeks based on a previous lap).

Hey, 18 years ago I had an ovary and tube removed due to a massive cyst. It was done through open surgery and I had 12 weeks recovery. Given yours is being done less invasively then I would imagine much less time needed Smile

MamaWeasel · 09/03/2019 15:06

Mine was the same as Ginger, but modern methods are so much better, I would expect you to be up and running in a couple of weeks. Good luck with the op!

Reallybadday · 09/03/2019 15:10

I had an ovary and cyst removed using laparoscopic surgery. I was back at work after about a week but had to take things really easy for a couple more weeks.

Ledkr · 09/03/2019 15:12

I had both removed as a day case and was probably in bed for two days with slight pain but some bleeding.
I felt normal after around a week.

Janecon · 09/03/2019 15:14

I had the same operation. I was up and about within 24 hours, although in some discomfort, and back at work within a week. It was absolutely fine and I had no problems with recovery. I hope it goes well.

burnoutbabe · 09/03/2019 16:01

Had it a few years ago, was walking around after a day or so and working from home after 1 week, back at work within 2.

Crappygilmore · 09/03/2019 16:05

Mine was 29 years ago. Open surgery. Gangrenous (sp) cyst on an ovary. Had one completely removed and 1/3 of the other taken. It took weeks as the scar was 10 inches across my stomach. Now a days most laprascopic surgeries have such a smal recovery time. The only down side will be no driving for a month. Good luck.

DirtyDeeds · 09/03/2019 16:23

Thanks all; I’m just quite nervous about it for some reason. Sad sounds consistent with the other lap recovery though

I had a cyst, an ovary & both tubes removed by keyhole. I was in hospital about 4 hours & up & about within 24 hours, no pain or discomfort & fully healed within 10 days.

ambereeree · 09/03/2019 16:42

I had a burst tube removed. Took a couple of weeks. The worst is the blosting and trapped gas hurting your back and shoulders. Get peppermint tea ready.

TheMShip · 09/03/2019 16:50

I had one tube out as an emergency, also a lap. Two weeks to be doing most things, about 6 till I felt really myself again. Good luck, OP!

flyings0l0 · 09/03/2019 16:52

I was off work for 10 days. then back to normal (just not straight back to exercise/swimming) but otherwise it was fine. was done via lap too.

Prequelle · 09/03/2019 16:58

Lap: You can go home the same day here if you feel up to it, most decide to wait for the following day though. Most women are up and about like normal but avoid anything too strenuous for a couple of weeks.

Open: few days in hospital, can take 6-8 weeks recovery wise on average but obviously all women differ.

Prequelle · 09/03/2019 16:59

I second the peppermint thing. The majority of women's pain comes from the air that's put inside of you during the op and it can really hurt!

FlindersKeepers · 09/03/2019 17:02

As mine was done in Germany and on private insurance, it was 3 days in hospital and a week total off work. No baths in that time. Sport ban for 4 weeks.
This was one ovary with tube plus fibroids done by keyhole.
I also had physio due to the stomach muscle weakness caused by the incisions (take care when getting out of bed!), however, I did not have the shoulder and back pain - luckily. My scars are virtually gone a year later too.
If you need it done, please don't be scared!! All the best Flowers

FlindersKeepers · 09/03/2019 17:04

Yes to peppermint tea and avoiding things that bloat like cauliflower. Think I had clear soups etc in hospital.

MintyCedric · 09/03/2019 17:06

Had my right ovary removed 4 years ago.

Day surgery (was expecting to be in one night and could've done with it tbh).

I then had three weeks off work and another week or two phased return, which was probably a bit over cautious but if had another surgery in the same area 6 months prior and rushed back to work after barely a fortnight...it was not fun.

Don't know if this is a 'thing' but about 24 hours after my op I had a monumental hot flush which lasted most of the evening and I assume was my remaining ovary adjusting to having to do twice the work!

snoozetastic · 09/03/2019 17:07

Think I had 2 weeks off work but wasn't full of energy even then.

Some of it depends on how you usually are with general anaesthetics

Prequelle · 09/03/2019 17:11

minty I've observed this response a lot and it's interesting you've mentioned it. It causes some nurses to worry because your temp goes up and we have it drilled into us to spot signs of infection, but I just shove a fan on and give it time to pass. 9/10 it resolves and no need to start doing bloods and giving IVs

DirtyDeeds · 09/03/2019 23:08

Thank you thank you all 🙏🏻

Sounds like anywhere between 1-3 weeks... I don’t heal as quickly as I used to following an unplanned caesarean

MintyCedric · 11/03/2019 09:30

Prequelle that's really interesting. It's not something I've ever discussed or heard about before but just kind of free my own conclusions.

It didn't worry me overly at the time as it felt very much like a bit flush rather than a fever. I had my op early afternoon on a Friday and it kicked in about 6/7pm the following (Sat) evening and lasted until the early hours of the Sunday morning when I eventually fell asleep.

When I woke up I felt fine and it didn't happen again as far as I can remember.

DirtyDeeds good luck and take it easy Flowers

LilQueenie · 11/03/2019 09:39

First one entailed a lot of other surgery and took a few weeks with a couple months of taking it easy. Second time they took part of an ovary and I was up and about in a couple of days.
