AIBU to think i should be able to park in my own driveway

Everyday (almost) me and OH try to park on our driveway someone has parked across it and when we nicely ask them to move we re met with abuse. Im beginning to wonder if people with basic manners are a dying breed. One particular neighbour seems to have made it her lifes mission to try and turn all the neighbours against us..bizarre

HouseOfGoldandBones · 07/03/2019 20:59

OP, have you got a dropped kerb?

2fingers22018 · 08/03/2019 11:32

@HouseOfGoldAndBones yes at one side our driveway is big enough to fit two cars in but we only have one car so one side is lowered to let our car in. It was like this when we bought the house said neighbour is insisting we dont have a driveway lol its crazy its lowered and paved youd think she d b happy we park in it and free up more spaces on the street.

We only have permit parking on our St.
Except the neighbour with her own CARPARK - who keeps it locked and EMPTY and parks on the St. Bizarre...

2fingers22018 · 08/03/2019 11:46

@Easterbunnyiscomingsoon that is bizarre some people just want to prove a point i think lol i know its such a petty thing to get into an argument about but part of me feels like i bought a house with a driveway to use it why should it bother anyone. I think its jealousy that they dont have one lol

userschmoozer · 08/03/2019 11:49

Some people just live for a row. My neighbours landlord paved over their lovely garden to make a car park and locked the gate! It could only be out of spite because he didn't have to do anything to maintain it. And ever since he's been known as Miserable Len Grin

Easterbunnyiscomingsoon · 08/03/2019 11:54

The thing is we all have to pay for our permits!! She /he pays for 2 as her ds is still at home - bonkers!!

2fingers22018 · 08/03/2019 12:03

@userschmoozer i think they do shes always looking out of her window doing her nosey lol clearly needs to get a life😂surprised he doesnt open it and charge people to use it. The thing is its really hard to get a parking space on my street so if people park there for 10mins i dont say anything unless we re trying to get in and we re blocked or tryin to get out to go to work etc i dont understand their thinking am i supposed to say sorry i ll leave my car and get the bus?! @Easterbunnyiscomingsoon they must have money to burn. Thanks for listening to me rant girls lol

TopShagger · 08/03/2019 13:04

What?! If it's your driveway and it has a dropped kerb then of course you have every right to use it and people shouldn't be blocking it without a bloody good reason. Ask once, if they get shitty then EXPLODE in a fit of rage and put the fear of death into them. Observe clear driveway from thereon out.

2fingers22018 · 08/03/2019 13:09

@TopShagger believe me we ve tried that😂as the other poster said sum ppl love a fight i was polite to her until she started screamin at my OH one day. I started screaming at her you can tell she enjoys the drama shes got nothing else goin on lol

Can you get the council to paint a white line outside delineating your drive space and therefore preventing people parking? Lots of people have these across their drives here as we are near a primary school.

Muddysnowdrop · 08/03/2019 13:19

Was the dropped kerb dropped officially or unofficially? Perhaps that is what annoys your neighbour. We have loads of unoffical drop kerbs in our street and we still manage to get along.

2fingers22018 · 08/03/2019 13:43

@livingthegoodlife we ve looked into it but its not illegal to park across the white lines so itd be a waste of time with this lot tbh @Muddysnowdrop im not sure it was dropped when we bought it and whoever dropped it has done a gd job the pavements perfectly smooth and done with the same stones looks like it was done years ago lol shes lived here longer than us so she knows we didnt lower it i honestly think shes jealous. Trying my best to just ignore her but she makes it very hard staring at us and giving us dirty looks everytime she sees us lol

If it's not done by the Council then it's not a drive, no - have you checked (or more importantly, has your neighbour, she sounds like the type to?!)

Roffle2019 · 08/03/2019 13:49

We need a diagram

2fingers22018 · 08/03/2019 13:51

@ChicCroissant ive got no reason to believe it wasnt done by the council but your right she is the sort to check but i asked her how would u know anything about my property all she said was i know that was it you think she would ve said ive looked into it but maybe she didnt want to say cause she knows how sad that would sound lol

I believe the law states that if someone is blocking your drive then the council has authority to take action over this. They only cannot say anything if someone is parked on your drive (if you own your house). So you can report to the council and see what they say.

Basecamp65 · 08/03/2019 14:01

My understanding is that in law it is illegal to block your access to the highway but NOT to your drive. So they cannot block your car in on the driveway but you have no legal right to access to your driveway.

Dropped kerbs and white parking spaces are more courtesy - when for personal access rather than installed officially for disabled access.

We looked into this as we live near a railway station and our roads are constantly filled with commuters telling us they could park in our streets as we did not own the highway and had no right to expect to be able to park. We often had to park 1/2 mile away from our houses. One particularly objectionable individual found his driveway on his nice posh estate 5 miles away blocked every single night by a big white van when he returned from work - as he had no right to be able to access it.

The law may have changed since then so I am happy to be told different but this was confirmed to us a few years ago.

wafflyversatile · 08/03/2019 14:05

What is it that she is saying and screaming to you?

ChorleyFMcominginyourears · 08/03/2019 14:18

Basecamp is right, no-one can block you while you're parked on your drive but they can block you off it, it's ridiculous but true, we have the same problem where I live which has now been sorted as we have 2 cars and only space for 1 on the drive so we park over our own driveway now and move to let the other car on and off.

Jaxhog · 08/03/2019 14:18

I would work on the assumption that your dropped curb is legal, then it would be up to her prove otherwise.

Under current UK law 'Parking a vehicle fully or partially across a dropped kerb is classed as an obstruction and either the police or local council can enforce the contravention.'

Report her to the council and/or the police.

onthenaughtystepagain · 08/03/2019 14:22

Someone I know cured their neighbour in a similar situation by getting two old Land Rovers parked either side for a couple of days!

LizzieMacQueen · 08/03/2019 14:24

OP

Re attaching a photo. I just wrote you a reply and when I came to attach a photo (a screenshot of what to do) I couldn't either.

Wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Normally you hit the paperclip to add a file (or photo). On the app anyway.
