So what I'm getting from this is that I can keep my Bodum, but should really buy fresh beans and a grinder?

I refuse to buy those pods

SurgeHopper · 08/03/2019 01:47

Sorry, is a French press the same as a cafetiere? Or is it something different?

^^

Same thing, Phil.

TakingtheLeap · 08/03/2019 03:45

@PhilODox

Italian stovetops make a short, strong coffee (ours doesn't quite make espresso), but you can just add hot water to make basically an Americano.

I love the ritual of hand-grinding beans, filling the stovepot, and waiting for it to do its magic. And delicious coffee at the end!

TakingtheLeap · 08/03/2019 03:46

(That said, not sure I'd do stovetop if I had electric hobs. Super quick on gas and easy to adjust if you overdo heat. I'd just have slow and/or burnt coffee on electric...).

Smotheroffive · 08/03/2019 04:54

Consider the environment when throwing away masses of plastic every day.

Stove top Italian percolator all the way. The same as the expensive machine. Hate nespresso and all those ridiculous pods, lazy and horrid

BouleBaker · 08/03/2019 06:01

Nespresso here. I like different coffees at different times of day.

I do have an aero press but am I doing something wrong with it? The water seems to rush out the bottom about as quickly as I fill it.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/03/2019 06:35

I have had a Pavoni machine for nearly 25 years (just had it serviced for the first time).
Makes brilliant espresso, cappuccino, latte etc. No waste from pods etc. They last forever and it looks great! And why buy a coffee machine without an eagle? Grin

You need to use the inverted method.

MinnieMountain · 08/03/2019 07:19

Another Aeropress fan. We take ours on holiday too so we always have decent coffee.

ivykaty44 · 08/03/2019 07:23

Although I love my tassimo, I think the pods are limited if you don’t want or take sugar in your coffee - which I don’t

I’d get a nesspreso as there is more selection of coffee

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 08/03/2019 07:25

I have a Nespresso and a cafetière. Cafetière for a mug of morning coffee, Nespresso for everything else, I drink coffee black.

I don’t like the stovetop machines as they make coffee too burnt ( the water has to be boiling for it to work), and the aero press is too faffy.

Would really like to buy a Jura bean to cup machine..l.

madeyemoodysmum · 08/03/2019 07:25

Nespresso is best. We have tassemo at work and I have nespresso at home. It makes far Better coffee.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 08/03/2019 07:51

No to pods. Hideously environmentally unfriendly and the milk ones are not good.

Italian stovetop is my favourite.

Allgoodfun · 08/03/2019 07:56

Delongi espresso/ cappuccino machine. Years ago had a pod one and never liked the coffee and the waste is ridiculous . It takes only a few extra seconds to put coffee in than pods and you have the choice of any coffee. I like strong coffee and favourite is Sainsbury’s own Sumatra blend. I always take a cafetière on holiday so. Can have decent coffee.

hammeringinmyhead · 08/03/2019 08:14

I have a Nespresso Latissima and a stovetop which I love but haven't used for years as it doesn't fit on our gas hob. I've never got on with a cafetiere.

I don't find pods too expensive as one coffee a day costs me about 25p.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2019 08:33

I have a Tassimo and love it. there are some places that recycle the pods.
I have mentioned having one before but got beaten back by the coffee snobs. Grin

WhoTFIsAlanBrazil · 08/03/2019 08:38

I have the Nespresso Essenza, it is brilliant and has a very small footprint
I got it for £1 as part of the Nespresso subscription, and I pay £18 a month for capsules (about 50 capsules which is plenty).

I absolutely love it

NewPapaGuinea · 08/03/2019 08:52

Do not keep ground coffee in the fridge. Creates too much moisture.

OddestSock · 08/03/2019 08:55

We've got a bean to cup (delonghi) machine and it's fab. It gets used every day and makes lovely lattes and hot chocolates (using the milk geothermal!)

OddestSock · 08/03/2019 08:55

Frother. Not geothermal

user1474894224 · 08/03/2019 10:57

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats that's a seriously good looking machine.

Thank you Grin. I love it and use it several times each day.
I really like the fact that it is built to last for ever. I contacted the company who serviced it in case it was too old and they replied that it was only machines from the 1920s where they struggled with some parts!
It's also (as far as I know) the only coffee machine that's been in both a James Bond film and AbFab.

MissEliza · 08/03/2019 11:13

Is it possible to do an Americano with a Nespresso machine?

Snugglepiggy · 08/03/2019 11:25

Italian stove top.add a bit of water if I want less intense or larger mug.Top up with frothed milk.lavazza frother with two settings.lively and have to wait a bit longer but have my shower. And big factor for me no pods to throw in bin.

Flavabobble · 08/03/2019 11:30

I’ve got a stove top, espresso/cappuccino machine and a cafetière.
But I love my aeropress the most. Quick, easy to clean and takes up little room.
