Notices supply teacher making mistakes

A member of our Science team (secondary school) is off sick and between us we've covered the KS4 and 5 classes as far as possible, but the younger ones are being covered by a long term supply teacher.

He whinges a lot about behaviour, is late to lessons, and equipment from our labs gets ruined or lost under his supervision, but this seems par for the course.

However, I have noticed that his 'marking' is atrocious. Not only is it totally pointless and perfunctory, in that it doesn't address knowledge or skills, or move the learning on (and isn't even positive enough to build relationships or confidence), or pick up on literacy issues, but it is littered with his own spelling mistakes of key subject words, alongside simple everyday words. His general punctuation and grammar is appalling. This is on every marked piece of work for every child he has become responsible for.

WIBU to highlight this in some way? I'm not HOD, and don't know if i should pass on to him to deal with rather than say something directly, but I am concerned that these errors will filter through to the students' use!

I bet he knows how to spell 'noticed' though...

Stylovert · 07/03/2019 17:53

Thanks for your helpful response WillGymForPizza. I tapped slightly to the left of the letter I wanted on a qwerty keyboard on my phone, but I'm sure you knew that it was just a typo and totally different from repeatedly using the wrong letters unknowingly when writing by hand.

Why on earth are you posting this in AIBU on MN? Speak to your colleagues/subject lead/HOD

Houseonahill · 07/03/2019 17:56

Why would you not raise it with HOD?

Stylovert · 07/03/2019 17:58

Intohellbutstayingstrong I posted because I want to know if others think it would be fine for me to mention or if the consensus is that I'm being judgemental or expecting too much.

I'd just leave it if I were you. Unless you're in an area that has a lot of supply teachers it may be a choice of him or no one!

seven201 · 07/03/2019 18:01

Or raise it with your HOD.

Fishwifecalling · 07/03/2019 18:04

They may be fully aware that he isn't great but science teachers are in huge demand and there are few science teachers around. He may be their only option.

cauliflowersqueeze · 07/03/2019 18:05

Knowing the severe lack of qualified supply teachers, especially in science, in my area, I would say that it may well be hard to get a good one. However you should raise it.

Get this moved to the staffroom, OP! If your HoD doesn’t already know, do tell them. They will need to look at some of his books as a review, then support him in following department policy. These will be the steps you take before you can do anything else!

recrudescence · 07/03/2019 18:09

I’ll bet your HoD knows already, or soon will because concerned parents will let her/him know. As others have said, maybe he’s all that’s available. In your place, I’d stay out of it.

KindergartenKop · 07/03/2019 18:11

He's probably the best they can get! Recruitment is terrible!
