To ask advice re mirena coil

Hi, so I had mirena coil fitted a few years ago to stop flooding and constant bleeding. Also found out that I had many adhesions from endometriosis and fibroids. Whilst they inserted the mirena under GA they also lasered away these adhesions and took a sample of the mass, which turned out to be fibroids.

For 6 months the bleeding was still heavy and constant, then it lessened and wasn't so heavy, but after 4 years I'm still bleeding almost constantly.

Basically, I have about 2 weeks of 'period' bleeding (when it's heavier, etc) then the rest of the month I'll bleed one day, spot the next couple, then bleed again, etc.

This means that I probably only have about a week throughout each month when I'm not bleeding, and they're not usually consecutive.

I'm suffering really bad mood swings, which I didn't before, and have no libido at all.

I asked to have it removed as I felt it wasn't effective enough and not with it with the side effects that I was suffering.

My consultant refused and said they wanted me to try 6 months with injections as well as the coil first.

I've recently gone against their wishes and on Monday I had it removed by someone who didn't know my consultant didn't agree to it. I had been bleeding for 2 days when they removed it after 4 days of not bleeding previous to that. On Tuesday, I had the first injection with the consultant.

Since then I've been bleeding really heavily with clots and flooding.

Just wondering if you think it's connected? Will the hormones from the mirena already be out of my system?

Does the consultant know you've had it removed? I think you need to seek medical attention.

No, she doesn't, but my GP removed it. I just wondered if it must've been working to some extent, but now it's been removed the hormones aren't acting on my body so I'm bleeding more heavily again. Just thought they'd take longer to wear off. Or out it's side effects from this new drug already that's meant to induce the menopause.

I think the effects from mirena are supposed to stop immediately once it's removed.

I don't know. But you should probably see the consultant for advice and unapologetically tell her you've had it removed. She should not have 'refused' in the first place. It's your body.

Ok. Thank you for the replies. I will mention it at my next appt. Tbh, I was pretty gobsmacked when they refused to remove it. Like you say, it's my body. I did question it at the time, but they wouldn't budge.

Your body, your choice. Don't feel awkward about making a decision that you felt was correct for you.

A lot of women want mirenas removed and face a kind of almost-hostility over it. Lots of posters on MN have said this over the past year alone.
