World Book Day Costumes

Just seen a photo on FB of a child dressed as the Joker from Batman, surely not a character from a book, unless we're including comics?

AIBU in thinking that the point of dressing up on WBD is to be a favourite character from a book and not treat it as just a normal fancy dress day?

Graphic novels are books.

Misses point of the thread, but I have to say I'm so, so, so, so very pleased that I don't have to deal with this. Fortunately, it wasn't a thing when my kids were at school.

MumUndone · 07/03/2019 12:13

Is Batman a graphic novel though?

On the one hand you're right but on the other hand I'm sure there is a book made with batman and the joker in it. My DD went as a unicorn because she loves a unicorn character from a not very well known serious of books. I think it's better the kid chooses a character from a book they love rather than just have the parent choose a cute outfit or famous character.

That said Our school once had a Roald Dahl day and one boy came as darth vader which was pushing it slightly!

Is Batman a graphic novel though?

Batman has many graphic novels, as does The Joker. There are also the DC Super Friends series of picture books for children featuring Batman, Superman, etc. The Lego Movie and Lego Batman both have children's book tie-ins. When DS was smaller he had a set of superhero books about colours, shapes, and numbers.

Snobbery about what children are wearing on World Book Day is pretty low.

Lovestonap · 07/03/2019 12:22

hmmmm. A character in something that involves words and pictures. I'd say Batman fits the bill perfectly.

KAPOW! THWACK! Take that Evil Book Day Snob!

My DS went as the joker. His favourite book is actually diary of a wimpy kid, but he already had a joker costume and really wanted to wear it, so why not?

A comic is still a book imo.

Maybe the parent has learnt to pick their battles. If the child wants to go as Batman then why not? Do you think the other children will be pointing out that batman is not a book? Not all kids like dressing up.

Malorie Blackman championed Graphic Novels as a neglected source of children's literature when she was Children's Laurette. She believed it was an excellent way to bring in reluctant readers (especially boys) into reading and thinking visually and creating stories.

Batman and the Joker are in 100's of Graphic Novels.

According to my seven year old the book corner in his classroom includes:

  • Star Wars books
  • Superhero books
  • Football books
  • Disney Princess books.

We spent some pretty futile time trying to persuade him that he should go as something from an original book, rather than a book adaptation of a film, but he was resolute (and logical) that he wanted to be a Jedi.

And you know what, he was right, they are books and if we’re encouraging kids to read we shouldn’t then get sniffy about the books they choose. Most kids in his class haven’t seen the Avengers movies or much of the Star Wars series, but they have read the books at school or at home.

That said, mine decided five minutes before we left that he didn’t fancy being a Jedi any more and went as Ron Weasley instead, so my middle class mummy halo was only slightly, rather than totally, tarnished. Because that’s what we’re talking about, isn’t it? Judging parents for letting their kids choose less ‘worthy’ characters from books that originated as books.

Batman was a comic before he was a film or a Lego.Hmm

I'm a supply teacher and in the school I am at today the TA told me that the dc had to bring the book the character is from or they 'weren't allowed o dress up' (bit late) then as soon as they walked in the dc had to put the books in their trays and it's never been mentioned again.

I've a full on orange faced wig wearing oompa loomoa and it's not being acknowledged at all that people are dressed up. And it's PE this afternoon.

NerrSnerr · 07/03/2019 12:33

Of course comics are books. Batman was from books before he was on the telly or in films.

Littlebelina · 07/03/2019 12:33

World book Day snobbery threads are doing well here todayHmm

Maybe the kid already had a joker costume and the parents didn't want the expense or waste of another
