Describe how "hungry" feels to you?

This question has come about from a conversation with my friend who's trying to lose weight.

I said what had helped me was only eating when I felt hungry.

She said she always feels hungry. I wonder now if her concept of hunger is different to mine?

When I'm hungry, my stomach feels empty and rumbles...that's hunger. She said she just always feels like eating...they're different no? I think she has lost the ability to actually feel hunger because she never gives herself a chance.

Sometimes feel sick and faint if I leave it too long. Mostly just get very grumpy, tired and lack concentration. I’m not a very nice person to be around when I’m truly hungry Grin.

Hungry is an actual pain, like a pp said, like a clenched fist.

Your friend says she “always feels like eating” and that’s different to being hungry.

If you go past the hungry stage it is surprisingly easy to go 24+ hours without eating. Maybe your friend was always encouraged to clear her plate then given pudding, three meals a day etc so hasn’t really experienced true hunger.

If I eat breakfast I keep eating all day. If I skip breakfast, I can go 24hours between meals. When I was in my 20-40s I was skinny and often forgot to eat.

grumbling tummy is a bit hungry - can settle this for an hour by drinking a cup of tea.

Shaky and trembly hands usually means I need to eat.

NannyRed Yes... same for me. Breakfast starts me on the road to eating all day. If I avoid breakfast I don't feel hungry until about 2pm, and even then I can just have a cup of tea and be fine again. If I ate a proper breakfast it would awaken my inner eating beast!

This has just made me stop and observe my own hunger (I haven't eaten all day but I have had calories from sugar and milk in three coffees).

It's an ache, an emptiness and I feel a bit sick. I can wait the half an hour for food to cook though and then I'll clean the plate.

I don't know Blush I'm an over eater, so I eat for enjoyment, rather than to satisfy hunger.

I've got it under control but I still don't think i really know what 'hungry' feels like.

Chiming in with the other low carbers I now realise that that “omg I must eat now it’s an emergency Im gonna die I could eat a horse” feeling is not hunger it’s to do with being on what is known as “the carb-glucose-insulin rollercoaster”. And it was hell living like that.

I don’t eat breakfast either - it makes me more hungry, opens the floodgates. I do 16:8.

Hunger now is I start feeling tired then I know.

I’m hungry now-stomach is grumbling and I have a slight headache. However I’m sitting on a train listening to an audio book and I can deal with it fine and will happily wait the hour until I get home and eat

However if I was feeling this feeling at home with the kids being demanding I would be on the edge-hangry and prowling the kitchen for snacks!

I have two types of hungry - hungry in my mouth and hungry in my tummy. When I'm hungry in my mouth I try to only have a drink of water or a cup of tea because I know that it's not an empty stomach. This is not always successful and I sometimes have Cake with my tea!

Maybe see if your friend can differentiate between mouth hungry and tummy hungry to help her with her weight loss.

I have pcos and insulin sensitivity so I know mine is blood sugar hunger. I haven't felt stomach rumble hunger since puberty.

For me hungry feels like a headachy shakey feeling. Quite often my jaw clenches too and I get a bit clammy. I used to get very irritable as well, but that has abated with age!
