To feel annoyed that I can never really indulge in food? I'm short!

Somewhat lighthearted Envy

I'm quite short, so my personal calorie allowance is very low if I don't want to put on weight!

What an absolute pile of tosh. I'm 11 pounds overweight, I was 13 pounds overweight recently. I've lost weighted easily by going by the calculated amount of calories I should be having, and sticking to those.

I log everything in Fitness Pal. It's fairly easy in theory. But bores me to tears.

Being short means I can't ever be slim unless I eat like a bird.

Anyone else?

I'm 5'5 and I feel small. Am I small? Or average? Who knows

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/03/2019 13:19

Can I join the club too? I am short and curvy and struggling to not be too chubby unless I eat sweet FA!

Grace212 · 07/03/2019 13:22

I'm the same OP. I work out regularly but I'm amazed at how much taller people can eat, in fact do need to eat. I'm shorter than you. It's a mare.

Good thing I'm not a fan of eating out because all those portions are calculated for someone who is 6ft 4!

grannycake · 07/03/2019 13:23

Try being short and over 60 - your calorie needs go down the older you get. But 5:2 works for me or at least 6:1 now I'm back at my happy weight. It doesn't mean I can eat all the cake though. I restrict alcohol, chocolate and cake to the weekend and then not all three on the same day. I also don't snack ever

The average height for women in the UK is 5 ft 3, so I don't understand all the 5 ft 3 and 5 ft 4 posters saying that they are short. Also a previous poster said that shorter people have smaller appetites. They don't.

It may be average in the UK (actually it's just under), but it is still short. Hence petite clothes being for 5'3 and under usually

I hear you.

I'm 5ft and put on 5lb over Dec/Jan. DBiL said "you've piled on the beef girl!"

"It may be average in the UK (actually it's just under), but it is still short. Hence petite clothes being for 5'3 and under usually"

How can it be both average and short?

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/03/2019 15:29

I have to admit I was surprised to see that the average height is 5'3 seeing as most clothes seem to be designed for people several inches taller and most petite ranges, such as next are, and I quote, " perfectly proportioned for women 5 ft 3' and under".

Mmmhmmm · 07/03/2019 15:30

Ugh yeah being short and having a small frame blows, makes even the smallest weight gain obvious.

outpinked · 07/03/2019 15:44

If it helps I am 5 foot 7 so definitely not short and I seemingly gain weight just looking at cakes so 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Some people definitely gain weight easier than others, I really don’t care what anyone says. I put in 18k steps a day and still can gain weight if I have one or two ‘cheat days’ in a week.

hastingsmua1 · 07/03/2019 15:56

Everyone’s different. I’m short too but have the opposite problem - I find it hard to put on weight and lose weight easily (inc all the good areas!). However I definitely agree that short women put weight on faster, even just having a heavy supper can give you an instant ‘food baby’ appearance

lljkk · 07/03/2019 20:09

49 minutes 10 seconds, Trainsong, says Swimtag. But I was actually in the pool for about 53 minutes. I am usually the slowest in the fast lane.

800m or 1km is good too! I'm good at my own company. I can stand it for 53 minutes. Grin

panticus · 07/03/2019 21:26

OP 5:2 is amazing - it's the only "diet" I'd recommend (although I think it's sustainable enough to be a lifetime habit, so don't really like calling it a diet). Once you get to the weight you want you can drop back to 6:1 for maintenance.

I've been doing 6:1 for about 5 years with the odd bout of 5:2 if I need to rein my weight back in (eg post holiday). I also combine it with 16:8 at times.

I have noticed that people seem to fall into two quite distinct baskets with 5:2 - they either find it really doable, or absolutely impossible. If you're the type of person who can skip breakfast or lunch with no problems, I'd say you're better inclined to succeed at it.

blueshoes · 07/03/2019 22:08

Short person over 50 who does 5:2 to keep weight in check. I do daily weigh ins and will fast 2-3 days in a row if necessary to get the dial back down. The key is not to put on too much weight to begin with. Other days, I can indulge.

blueshoes · 07/03/2019 22:09

panticus I can skip breakfast and lunch with no problems if I avoid food triggers

Houseonahill · 07/03/2019 22:22

5ft3 is average for women in the UK? Where are all these short women? I want to meet them! I'm 5ft2 and I feel like atleast 90% of women my age are taller than me? Do I just not notice the short ones? Or do i live in a very tall town?

Footloose80 · 07/03/2019 22:44

155cms now. Unfortunately I do not have a small appetite.
Obese but working on it. I dread to think how few calories I will be able to eat when I reach target even though I do between 10 and 30 k steps per day.
