To be concerned about the rollout of 5G?

NigelGresley · 04/03/2019 17:15

Very little information seems to be available about whether 5G is actually safe. It involves the use of much higher frequencies than current 2/3/4G and will need many more transmitters.

It feels as though we are sleepwalking into this without taking the time to properly understand the potential health impacts.

Are phones and other devices now such an integral part of our lives that we will use them no matter what the cost is?

Thank you jimmyhill. Now I know what g stands for. I don't know what its importance is nor why we should worry about it. Is the implication that each generation is more powerful than its predecessor and we will fry our brains with increased radiation?

Arnoldthecat · 04/03/2019 20:27

I doubt that there will be a rush of new masts. They will simply install suitable antennae on existing sites. Many such sites are discretely sited on high rise buildings and disguised masts in the streets. We could take them all away and go back to the days of using call boxes in streets and landline phones ?

longwayoff · 04/03/2019 21:47

Shamoogren, any the wiser? Me neither, haven't got a clue.

Nigel, thank you. A lot clearer now, that was very helpful.

Buster72 · 05/03/2019 08:37

Ugh, isn't this the same paranoia we had 30years ago that a microwave would cook you from the inside if you stood next to it.
That mobile phones give you brain tumours.
Give me 5g now....and a battery that lasts all day....

Cathmidston · 05/03/2019 09:16

Mark Steel has done a lot on this. The roll out is planned to be country wide and councils in various areas are already cutting down trees as foliage interferes with the range apparently. I personally think this is a massive concern

GregoryPeckingDuck · 05/03/2019 09:25

Is there anything currently in use with similar wave length emissions?

NigelGresley · 05/03/2019 10:45

Nope. Are the many doctors and scientists who have written to governments and regulatory bodies with their concerns all just paranoid?
In fact it’s much easier not to bother trying to inform yourself about it and just hope everything will be ok.

The first major test bed was in the midlands but look at where the government grants have been allocated to further the testing, lots of emphasis on rural areas and this is only ‘phase 1’. They will be near hospitals as well because they want to use 5g for outpatient appointments. The .gov website gives info for who funding has been allocated too.

I know people like to jump straight to conspiracy with this but it would make a massive difference if it was something MN could get behind. Even if it was just so people could be aware of the dangers of being located near these masts.

drspouse · 05/03/2019 11:32

Which doctors and scientist have written to the government?

NigelGresley · 05/03/2019 13:51

@StoorieHoose and @Ariela

not sure about that... seems they already have rural testbeds:

Agree that it would be great if we could get MN behind this Uptheduffagai. However I don't think this is a case of people jumping to conspiracy theories, which I'm not generally a fan of. I think the 'conspiracy label' is attached to things like this by those who seek to discredit genuine concerns.

Orkney may be a test bed but there are parts of Edinburgh that struggle to get 3g nevermind 4g

Scotsrule · 05/03/2019 18:31

I regularly drive through the area that video refers to in Gateshead, and I can assure you there are loads of birds 🙄

MoistMolly · 05/03/2019 18:51

I think the poor air quality in most areas will kill you long before supposed dangerous radiation from 5g masts.

NigelGresley · 05/03/2019 22:13

MoistMolly
So we have poor air quality in some areas (arguably mostly inside our own homes!) and something should be done about that.

However I don’t really understand why that means we should bury our heads in the sand about any potential health implications of 5G.

It’s not “supposed radiation” it is radiation, and it is on a frequency that we haven’t been exposed to before.

cannycat20 · 05/03/2019 23:38

Come and live in the West Country (not Bristol). You can barely get a WiFi, 3G or landline signal in many places, never mind 5G.

NigelGresley · 06/03/2019 07:38

@cannycat20
See the link I posted yesterday at 13.51. Rural areas are being targeted to ensure 5G provides coverage. I’m sure it won’t be long before we see complaints about the multiple transmitters that will be needed everywhere.

chl0e123 · 12/03/2019 23:39

There's a difference between ironising and non ironising, regardless there is not much awareness about the radiation and wireless frequency damage, people use microwaves, but there are things people don't know, like baby monitors use these waves, sun beds the ultra violet lights etc even our tv's now and we are exposing our children to these, now 5G is much more powerful military frequency doctors have shown a great concern on the impact of the human body, people get exciting that they can get 5G and don't even know what it means, even outside our houses those little green lights on top of light posts are frequency waves and on busses, we don't get a choice we're exposed to it regardless and it's not right.

SunsetBunny · 20/05/2019 09:54

Who thought 5G transmitters on street lights was some sort of tin foil hatter conspiracy theory?
