To think this is a silly move?

my brother has an undergraduate degree in biology (4 year course) a nursing degree (3 years) and an msc (2 years) plus a teaching course he didn’t complete, so ten years altogether.

As a result he’s only worked a total of 4 years as a nurse. The rest of the time he’s either been at uni or doing low paid sort or jobs, nothing wrong with that.

Now he wants to train as a physician associate.

His mind is made up and he’s adamant and I can’t talk him out of it. But surely at £18000 in tuition fees this is a bit insane?

What exactly does it have to do with you?

nomorenursing · 03/03/2019 19:27

I love him and am worried about him. Our parents are dead so we’ve only really got one another family wise.

Is he demanding you pay?

Why would you want to talk him out of it?

nomorenursing · 03/03/2019 19:30

Because I think firstly he’s spent ten years as a student but only four working (and that’s with breaks) - I think rather than additional qualifications he needs work experience.

I also worry about long term with no pension (he’s already 40) or real stability.

Also from what I have heard, the physician associate hasn’t the best routes into employment but maybe some here know more about it than me.

How is he funding his studies?

Fromage · 03/03/2019 19:34

But these are his choices about his life - if it makes him happy, what's the problem? It might not be what you choose to do, but given his qualifications I'm going to assume he's not a moron and has considered his position regarding his pension and "stability" (whatever that means) and made an educated (literally) decision.

I mean, it's not like he's announced he's plunging money into a MLM or sending it to that nice Nigerian prince who emailed him. He wants to continue to study rather than do what you want him to do.

Who's he hurting?

nomorenursing · 03/03/2019 19:36

He’s selling a property amy

That’s just the point fromage, he could be hurting himself. It would be the easiest thing in the world to nod and smile and let him get on with it. And he will probably do it anyway. But if at the end of it there is no job, or one that isn’t the answer to all his hopes and dreams, then that’s going to hurt him.

If he's not even working in healthcare despite his nursing qualification and is instead doing lower paid jobs, whilst wanting to pursue another healthcare profession then YANBU but what can you do as he's a grown adult.

nomorenursing · 03/03/2019 19:39

He’s currently working as a nurse, but has only been doing so since September 2016.

Well I suppose that makes it less unreasonable then 😀 would he not rather progress to an advanced nurse practitioner or similar instead of starting at the bottom again?

Fromage · 03/03/2019 19:44

Look on the gloomy side, why don't you. What if there is a job. What if he finds a job that relates to a different one of his many qualifications?

Is he really so dim that he hasn't worked all this out for himself? Or - and I mean this seriously and kindly - is there some other reason that he doesn't understand the personal implications of his choices?

And listen, someone who has spent 10 years in education and less time in work, doesn't want to work, they want to study. And if he has the funds, why not?

He'll get a job when he needs to, I imagine.

nomorenursing · 03/03/2019 19:46

There’s almost certainly some undiagnosed autism, and I’d be happy if it all worked out for him. I hope it does but £18000 is a lot of money.

He can’t train as a nurse practitioner because he was suspended from work for a long time. It’s a bit complex.
