World book day. High school

So am I the only parent of high school pupils that thinks this is a bit ridiculous.

My dd has a letter saying dress up for world book day or detention... and characters that wear normal clothes are not allowed.

Now I personally hate dressing up and if invited to a do I'd not go rather than dress up and feel a twat.

Honestly at school I'd have bunked off. No way would you have got me in there dressed up!

Also I now have to go and spend however much on a dressing up outfit for a 14 year old who will never wear it again!

Get some rabbit ears and then say he/she is a rabbit from Watership Down.

GerryblewuptheER · 03/03/2019 11:56

Do they not also realise that many will walk cycle or have to get the bus . And costumes are not practical. Do they want teenage boys stood around freezing in bus stations dressed in ridiculous outfits?
And what about the girls who get enough cat calling and harassment as it is. Make them sit on a bus in little more than a sex shop outfit?

They know that hoods and face coverings wont be allowed on the bus train or in shops right?

Alsohuman · 03/03/2019 11:57

Complain to the head, I doubt you’ll be alone.

SaucyJack · 03/03/2019 11:57

My DDs’ secondary is doing it.

Big one is looking forward and has sorted herself a costume.

Younger one hates the idea. They can go in school uniform tho.

Maybe send yours as a Muggle if they have to dress up?

lots of fake tattoos

or a blue dres and a pile of book-matilda

red and white stripy t shirt and jeans-where's wally

Mumsymumphy · 03/03/2019 12:08

Photo of the letter or it never happened.

Kokeshi123 · 03/03/2019 12:10

"You WILL have fun... or else!!!" (points gun at pupil's head)

How ridiculous. Sounds like a good day to catch a convenient cold. Let's face it, they probably won't be missing anything that involves actual education.

Though to be honest, I would expect any teenager with a bit of spirit to go in naked or wearing something offensive.

IceRebel · 03/03/2019 12:13

Have you actually seen this in writing? It seems absolutely bizarre.

//\ This.

I can believe that the school are allowing children to dress up for WBD, if they wish. However, I cannot believe that the punishment for refusing to dress up is a detention.

Missmarplesknitting · 03/03/2019 12:14

In our school we all go as the same character. Kids and staff. One year was Harry potter (kids as pupils, school clothes plus a Hogwarts tie or scarf or robes if they wanted). I went as Professor Sprout.

Another year we all did Where's Wally. Hilarious, the corridors looked like a live puzzle. Just a stripy T shirt and jeans. Could be done with felt pen and a t shirt from Primark.

Makes for great pictures too.

I find it amusing how teachers will sing the praises of uniform and how it's a leveller and no one can tell who has money and who doesn'tdespite uniform costing hundreds for logo shit and blazers then insist on crap like this. Primark shirt ha. My nearest primark is a bus/train journey away. Would cost me more in fares or even petrol to go get one than the shirt itself would cost.

sashh · 03/03/2019 12:45

I don't think this is legal OP.

Surely your job as a parent is to get your child to school, in appropriate uniform, rested and fed.

Punishing a child for not wearing a costume is madness.

How about a nun from Madeline? school uniform plus a head band with some material (matching uniform) attached to make a veil.

Missmarplesknitting · 03/03/2019 12:49

Nobody has to join in. It's entirely optional. Uniform is perfectly welcome.

oscarmayaweiner · 03/03/2019 12:50

I don't believe the detention bit, that just wouldn't happen. What does the letter say ? Have you actually seen it ?

Clutterbugsmum · 03/03/2019 12:52

I wonder how many teenagers will be 'ill' Thursday and Friday then.

My DC high school World book day they have a book sale in the library. No dressing up.

outpinked · 03/03/2019 12:52

They can’t demand this. Some pupils won’t have the money to buy or make a costume so they will be punished with detention for being poor? Brilliant Hmm. Equally many teenagers would find most costumes absolutely humiliating. It’s ludicrous.

CloudPop · 03/03/2019 12:53

I agree with you completely OP. It makes me groan every time it comes round.

IceRebel · 03/03/2019 13:06

@bullyingadvice2017 Could you confirm that the letter actually says there will be a detention given for those who fail to dress up in a costume.

Nnnnnineteen · 03/03/2019 13:07

I would imagine there will be 997 kids in detention and 3 poor sods dressed as something random. I would have seen detention as a badge of honour under such circumstances.

oreosoreosoreos · 03/03/2019 13:10

DSS is in year 11 and this is the first year they've done anything for World Book Day. Dressing up is mandatory.... I've suggested he goes as Jack Reacher - as a 6 foot something rugby player he looks more the part than Tom Crusie did!

BrizzleMint · 03/03/2019 13:11

What characters are in books that a 14 yr old would read that dont wear normal clothes

^ This. It's ridiculous, The only characters I can think of are ones from fantasy books like Terry Pratchett, I'm sure the school would love all the pupils to turn up as Death complete with a scythe - imagine the reaction of the local community at the all walking to school en masse Grin

HomeMadeMadness · 03/03/2019 13:14

That is sooo stupid. Dress up (probably as a character in a book designed for 6 year old's) or get detention. What a way to inspire a love of literature.

crisscrosscranky · 03/03/2019 13:18

Do you live in Essex? There is a high school near me who have sent a similar letter (someone posted in on FB).

I'd risk the detention because I suspect that there will be some many kids in the detention that they either don't enforce it or it's a bit of a party!

I say this as a mum who is of the school of thought that the teacher is always right and normally make my DD comply with school rules even if I think they're silly!

whyayepetal · 03/03/2019 13:19

OP, have you had an email from school about this? Do these sort of instructions usually come out via letter? I ask because it sounds like this could be a wind-up - particularly with the "no ordinary clothes" part. Could be some jokers gearing up to have a laugh at those who believe them? May be worth an email to school, to check that you have understood their letter correctly. Smile

theworldistoosmall · 03/03/2019 13:20

If this is legit I would be posting the letter everywhere

Haggisfish · 03/03/2019 13:21

997 in detention and 3 poor kids dressed up! Guffaw. I’m a teacher and think this is utterly ludicrous and divisive for all reasons above.
