AIBU watching Match Of The Day on Sunday morning

My wife says by watching MOTD I'm setting a bad example. I and My wife never watch TV whilst the kids are awake. Our kids (4 & 7) watch around 1hr - 1.5hr of telly a day. Normally a bit in the morning and 45 minutes at night whilst I'm cooking tea. I think I'm exposing my children to sport and demonstrating an personnel interest. The kids don't really watch MOTD; but do like to play in the living room whilst I'm watching. Also whist I'm watching I'm doing all the weeks ironing .

Notes: You can't watch MOTD on iplayer until Tuesday and we don't have a way of recording TV.

I can't see what the issue is. But then I was singing the theme tune to my 8 week old daughter yesterday morning so probably not the right person to ask 😂

Plus, you're doing the ironing. That definitely means you've earned the right to watch what you want. It's age appropriate and kids don't mind so crack on I say.

myotherbagisgucci · 03/03/2019 07:00

Not sure how watching it in front of the kids is setting a bad example. I think she's being very unreasonable, especially if you're watching whilst ironing!!

Personally MOTD isn't my sort of TV, but I'd DH wanted to watch it (ironing or not) then I can't think of any reasons why not. Even if DC were in the room.

Yanbu. If it was Game of Thrones I could understand your wife being annoyed but match of the day is perfectly inoffensive and why shouldn't the children know you also watch TV?

LL83 · 03/03/2019 07:05

I have how decided to record MOTD for my 8 year old as she could learn something about positions for her own football.

ApolloandDaphne · 03/03/2019 07:07

I grew up in a house with a sport loving DF - football, rugby, horse racing, golf. You name it he watched it. It never did me any harm. In fact it makes me feel a bit nostalgic.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/03/2019 07:08

You obviously have weird tv watching rules in your house. I think watching motd is absolutely fine.

weebarra · 03/03/2019 07:10

I love a bit of motd on a Sunday morning with the ironing! The DCs complain as they don't like football.

megletthesecond · 03/03/2019 07:11

Not watching TV while the kids are awake is a bit much.
MOTD is fine. Lots of sport us good to watch as a family.
Don't you watch Attenborough and things like that?

frenchonion · 03/03/2019 07:13

Your wife needs to unclench! Why would watching a bit of sport be setting a bad example?! Shock horror...parents watch TV from time to time. Can't see the issue. Especially since you're ironing while you're at it!!

Ohnonotuagain · 03/03/2019 07:14

I think his strict you are about tv time and what is on is too much.

Loosen up a bit and put MOTD on.

By all means, don't plonk yourselves in front of the tv all day but certain programmes could be educational or open up important chats as a family.

HK20 · 03/03/2019 07:16

Tell her you'll stop watching it if she does the ironing 🤷‍♀️ YANBU!

I think she’s being unreasonable - my ex wouldn’t even be up at that time!
My 9-year-old watches MOTD. Can’t say I’m overjoyed by it (mainly because the behaviour of some of the ‘men’ can be appalling, and because he’s the only one in the house that watches it), but it’s one of his interests and if that’s how he chooses to spend his free time on a Sunday morning, that’s his choice. He’s very active and has lots of non-sport interests too, so I don’t need to worry about too much telly overall, which it sounds like you don’t either. I do have to listen to a lot of statistics and stories afterwards though...

QueenofLouisiana · 03/03/2019 07:38

Assuming the children aren’t playing with the electricity sockets or the cooker while you watch, I’d say she IBU.
