To think this IS an infection despite the evidence?

DS3 is normally a happy, non-clingy child. This week he’s been completely over emotional, with terrible behaviour, mild raises in temperature that aren’t consistent (I.e, going up to 37.2 for a few hours then fine again for ten hours or so), and has wet the bed three nights in a row, when he is usually dry all night. Then this morning he said his willy was stinging when he did a wee - everything that’s happened all week suddenly made sense and I took him off to OOH GP. They dip tested his urine and said no signs of infection, but his willy does look a bit red, so here’s some cream to apply 3 times a day.... he’s just wet his bed again, and is so ‘not right’. AIBU to believe this is an infection despite the dip test evidence, and how do I get him some help?

Does he have any other symptoms? Weight loss or excessive thirst? Did the Dr check is blood sugar level?

My OHs only real symptom when he was diagnosed as diabetic as a teen was suddenly wetting the bed. He says in hindsight he was drinking more but it was also summer so didn't think much of it.

Just something to consider

Rtmhwales · 03/03/2019 01:33

If you're worried, take him back and ask for another test. Maybe check for diabetes like the previous poster suggested but I doubt that would make his penis burn. Unfortunately nobody on here can tell you if your DS has an infection or not.

When my UTI dip test came back inconclusive, the nurse sent it off to the lab to be tested. I'd push for that at least.

flumpybear · 03/03/2019 01:37

Lab test for urine - DD had problems with kidneys, mild, but every suspected UTI needed culturing and sometimes dip stick doesn't pick it up

JontyDoggle37 · 03/03/2019 01:42

Iccle thank you we will ask for a blood sugar check, although like wales I’m still more inclined to think infection st this point.
Questionable and flumpy will request a culture as well.
So reassuring to hear other people have found it to be an infection in similar circumstances, I will keep pushing them for him, I know he isn’t right.

I hope I don't upset you with what I am about to say but is there any chance he has been interfered with? Does he spend time with anyone who is not you or his Dad?

mingymoo · 03/03/2019 02:34

Could it be balanitis? Ds has previously suffered with redness and pain when going to the loo and generally being grumpy beforehand in retrospect. Negative urine sample but diagnosed with balanitis and prescribed antibiotics.

justilou1 · 03/03/2019 02:39

Problem with boys’ UTI’s is that their ureters are longer, so It takes longer for the bugs to make their way up to the bladder. Perhaps a swan test would be smarter option. I think antibacterial ointment is smart option, but it may not make it’s way in far enough to target the painful area. (Girls and boys bits are a bad design for this - and keeping their little paws off when it gets itchy at the beginning of an infection is nigh on impossible too.)

justilou1 · 03/03/2019 02:40

*SWAB not swan, obv. Swans are vicious beasties and the queen would DEFINITELY not approve of that purpose!!!

Emelene · 03/03/2019 02:51

Did you mean 37.2C? That's a normal body temperature. Fever for a child is 38 or above.

I hope your son feels better soon.

BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney · 03/03/2019 04:12

Came to say the same as PP, 37.2 isn't a high temperature. Sounds more like some local inflammation.

Weenurse · 03/03/2019 04:25

Ask for urine and blood tests as wetting bed not normal in this situation

JontyDoggle37 · 03/03/2019 06:27

Many thanks all. His normal body temp is around 36.6-36.8. Anything over 37 is usually a sign he’s not quite right. The doctor yesterday did mention balanitis, but only prescribed the cream, which she said has a little bit of antibiotic in it, but didn’t give oral antibiotics. Maybe we’ll try the cream through the day today then and see if it helps at all, and if no improvement by tomorrow, back to the doctor for cultures etc. Thank you Mumsnet!!!

FYI Henry no, he hasn’t been abused, no-one has got to him, he’s just a little boy with a sore willy.

I think it sounds like balantitis too!
