To replace our bedding with 100% cotton

We bought new bedding from ikea a couple of weeks ago and put it on this week. I don’t like the feel of it and I just looked at it says 50% cotton 50% lytocell.

I just hate it! Ugh I hate the feel of it and it’s all scratchy and hard. I really want to replace it with 100% cotton. My dh can’t understand what my problem is and thinks I’m being ridiculous and wasteful. AIBU?

Recoiling is just minor stuff. I once fainted at the stench of dry cleaning fluid.

Steamedbadger · 03/03/2019 12:14

Mumsnet - the site that keeps on giving. What kind of rash are us non-new-bedding-washers supposed to get? Just itchy or peeling as well?
In OP's position I would certainly try washing to see if it helps the feel of the bedding, but cotton is definitely the way to go in future.

Each to their own. I can't stand the smell of new bedsheets, and they have fold marks anyway, so they hardly look freshly ironed! They look a lot better after a wash, and I don't iron my beddings. Everything just dries on the line and doesn't look crumpled.

The only thing I ever wore unwashed was my wedding dress.

Supine · 03/03/2019 12:27

You know what they say about women who wear unwashed wedding dresses.

'if she wears an unwashed dress at the altar, her housekeeping standards will soon falter'

StinkyCandle · 03/03/2019 12:30

I realise I should be ashamed, but I was too vain to risk wearing a creased dress BlushBlushBlush

*it's not an actual proverb. I just made it up Grin

I love reclining on fresh out of the wrapping, chemical doused bed linen. Have never washed new sheets or clothing pre first use!

isseywithcats · 03/03/2019 12:38

like goldfish i have always taken new bedding out of the packaging and straight on the bed in fact i love the fact that its crisp and startchy it feels like new bedding, once its been washed it just like all the rest of my bedding dosent feel brand new any more , and no im not covered in rashes

Meandwinealone · 03/03/2019 13:05

People wash their bedding first!
I feel overjoyed that someone else has waged it for me!

HoraceCope · 03/03/2019 13:27

I did buy some from a cheap shop, B & M, or something and the smell wasnt very nice, but i didnt let that stop me.

StinkyCandle · 03/03/2019 13:32

it's not an actual proverb. I just made it up

I did get that and no, I've never been ashamed of my unwashed massive designer meringue affaire Grin

Another one for no fabric conditioner here. For bedding, towels or anything with Lycra. Fabric conditioner is product created by a marketing team. There's no need for it. Drop it, save your textiles, your machine, your wallet and the planet! I sewed elastic over the corners of my fitted sheets (diagonally) and the sheets stay on the mattress far better. See picture

I fold well so no ironing required

I'm not a millennial. Haven't used fabric conditioner for 15+ years.
My bed linen is 15 years old.

my 8 y old has spd so major sensory issues and the only bedding he can tolerate to sleep in is 100 brushed cotton

there is a major difference in feel from "normal" bedding

only draw back is it takes so long to dry, washing is normal but a super king sheet and quilt cover takes hours to dry,i haven't tried outside drying yet as this has only been since Christmas

Supine · 03/03/2019 19:38

I don't have sensory issues but find sleeping on polycotton or scratchy ikea cotton to be unpleasant. So I can imagine that a person who does have sensory issues would find it intolerable. Is brushed cotton the expensive stuff?

Isitmybathtimeyet · 03/03/2019 20:59

No, it's like flannelette but softer. So actually top quality brushed cotton will still be a lot less expensive than bazillion thread count pure cotton.
