To think ALL porridge oats are the same...

This is somewhat lighthearted, but can a person really tell the difference between Scott’s Porridge Oats and Harvest Morn (Aldi) Porridge Oats. My DH claims he can! The ingredients on both boxes say 100% Oats. I think he is just being a bit precious and a little snobby but I am happy to be proven wrong. I make muesli with the offending Oats and that tastes just the same to me.

I might have a look out for the Stoats porridge also as I do like a good porridge.

Thatsnotmyotter · 02/03/2019 11:36

We usually buy 75p Asda Smartprice pats because in the quantity DH eats them, I can’t be spending too much. However my DPs gave us a bag of Flahavan’s recently, claiming that they were ‘the best oats ever’... and to be fair, they were right. Blush

PaintBySticker · 02/03/2019 11:44

We’re all about the Flahavans in this house too. I started buying them because they come in a paper bag rather than plastic so more environmentally friendly too (I hope). Owe buy from Ocado.

JohnnyKarate · 02/03/2019 11:46

I buy oats for a living, among other things, and it is hard to comprehend just how many different types of oats there are out there on the market. I have tasted a lot of oats and can definitely taste the difference in them that it’s actually annoying I can’t buy cheap oats anymore.

Last week we’ve been testing out oat milks, I’m sick of the sight of it now, but they also were noticeably different depending on the type of oat used.

TwinkleTits70 · 02/03/2019 12:10

Cheap ones taste like cardboard and go a sludgy shade of grey. Has to be decent quality oats in this house. Preferably jumbo.

Have you blind tested him?

TwinkleTits70 · 02/03/2019 12:16

Can people stop recommending Flahavans please or everyone will know our secret and the supermarkets will sell out.

Greensleeves · 02/03/2019 12:17

Cheap ones are brilliant for making face masks Grin

Cwtches123 · 02/03/2019 12:17

Mornflakes superfast oats are our favourite at the moment.

EvaHarknessRose · 02/03/2019 12:20

but did you know that porridge is more creamy if you stir it vigorously for five minutes with the thin end of a wooden spoon? (Whether made with milk or water)

2019willbegreat · 02/03/2019 12:21

YABU OP - definitely a difference. Porridge oats is on my list of things that must be a certain brand along with tomato sauce and cling film.

2019willbegreat · 02/03/2019 12:22

Changing the subject slightly- salt or sugar??? I can do both but live really salty porridge with double cream. Yumm

longtompot · 02/03/2019 12:24

I never used to think there was a difference, until I bought Tesco own brand instead of Lidl cheapo. HUGE difference in that small jump. Much creamier and less husk bits. I would love to try Flannigans or one of the other more expensive ones I have seen suggested here one day.

longtompot · 02/03/2019 12:26

@2019willbegreat I have a good pinch of salt wgen cooking them and then have cold milk around it and some dark brown sugar on top. Delish!

TheSilveryPussycat · 02/03/2019 12:26

I think jumbo oats are sort of whole oats, rolled with the husk on (maybe).

Scotts porrige oats come in two ways, dont they? Scottish ones are slightly rougher, but I prefer the softer other sort.

Supermarket own brand are even softer, and can be dusty. These are the kind I buy, for porrige and flapjacks.

Irish oats are even softer, I wonder if this might be due to all the Irish rain?

Then there is oatmeal, coarse or fine ground.

Procrastination4 · 02/03/2019 12:31

We used to get Flahavans porridge oats (an Irish brand) but now I always buy a brand in Aldi called Kavanagh’s Organic Porridge oats. The flakes aren’t as small and powdery as Flahavans (not jumbo oats, by the way) and they make much nicer, creamier porridge. So, in my experience, all porridge oats are not the same.

Procrastination4 · 02/03/2019 12:32

Have only just seen the previous posts about FlahavansGrin ooops!!!!

Procrastination4 · 02/03/2019 12:36

EvaHarknessRose
Yes! You are so right. I bought a “spootle” in Scotland last summer. Now I couldn’t use anything else to make my porridge!

Procrastination4 · 02/03/2019 12:40

May be it’s a spurtle?? Anyway, my secrets for ovely porridge!

Lovely...

switswoo81 · 02/03/2019 13:15

I love flahvans ( made local to me) but find kavanaghs next best. Soak overnight in milk and seriously cuts cooking time really creamy too

outpinked · 02/03/2019 13:28

Slightly. DP likes ‘rolled oats’ but I don’t, they are too chunky and chewy.

NannyR · 02/03/2019 13:35

I've started making my porridge with steel cut pinhead oats. They make really thick and creamy porridge and are supposed to be lower GI and have more nutrition thank rolled oats.

Honeyroar · 02/03/2019 13:39

I bought a packet of Aldi, Tesco and Tesco value, and compared the flakes. They all looked the same to me (I’ve fed rolled oats for decades through working with horses). If anything, the value oats looked biggest.
