Toddlers Face is swollen

user5058 · 02/03/2019 08:42

My toddlers face is swollen this morning and he's got red cheeks.
He's completely happy in himself but I'm panicking!
DM said I should just keep an eye on it and not to worry.
AIBU to be freaking out a little bit?

If the swelling is around the mouth or lips please seek medical advice. Otherwise it could be an allergic reaction to something or a million other things. It's really hard to say, could you contact NHS helpline?

Cornettoninja · 02/03/2019 08:44

Had he got a temperature?

Tbh I think I would be indulging my neurotic mother tendencies and getting him checked out (have you got a walk in centre? Failing that 111). I prefer to cover all bases with creatures that can’t communicate properly yet! Swelling isn’t a symptom I would just wait and see over.

@comedycentral not round the mouth or lips, more his cheeks/eyes as his eyes look small (if that makes sense).

@Cornettoninja his temperature was a tiny bit high this morning, had Calpol and it's back to normal.

Have you got any piriton? Give him some of that and give 111 a call.

user5058 · 02/03/2019 08:47

@ErictheGuineaPig nope - didn't know it was even available to toddlers!

I will take a trip to the pharmacy.

That’s good. I still wouldn’t be happy without him being checked out though. 111 will get you an out of hours appointment if there’s no walk in.

I wonder if he has hay fever of some sort? There’s been a few blossoms out by us recently

madeyemoodysmum · 02/03/2019 08:52

Take him with you to pharmacy. They can advise you on further action.

This haptic to me after certain shell fish. My eyes disappear. Could well be an allergy. Grab some piriton asap

ScarlettDarling · 02/03/2019 09:02

Yes, it sounds like a reaction to something but I'd definitely want him checked out. Pharmacy for advice and piriton could be a good call but if that doesnt help I'd be getting him to an out of hours appointment.

@user5058: my toddler has the exact same. Started on one cheek and then spread to the other the next day and ears. In our case it's called: slapped cheek syndrome or "the fifth sickness" . Normal virus and not contagious.

shatteredandstressed · 02/03/2019 09:31

The 1st time my son, as a toddler , had a bite of a happy hippo chocolate bar (it contains hazelnut purée), this happened to him. Swelling was all around his eyes rather than orally.
I gave him Piriton liquid and took him to the GP.
He has to carry an epipen now.
Take some photos too ( not for posting here, just for your records).

user5058 · 02/03/2019 09:52

Thanks everyone for the replies - the pharmacist has said it looks like a reaction to something and has said to give piriton today and if no improvement then go to GP tomorrow.
