To be disappointed with my performance review

So I had my annual performance appraisal on Monday which for most people would be pretty good - I got above expectations for all areas, a couple of thousand bonus and a couple of thousand pay rise, but I feel it's not good enough and I'm being sidelined.

This time last year I'd just come off a 3-month performance review and was just happy keeping my job but this time I'm so disappointed.

A colleague with very similar experience has been promoted and made head for an area of the company where I have several clients and he has none.

I'm finding it so hard to go to work as I feel really unwanted and pushed out. How do I make it through each day without quitting?

Erm I think you need to get a bit of a grip - what were you expecting?

Littlechocola · 28/02/2019 20:49

I would quit immediately! LTB

YetAnotherUser · 28/02/2019 20:49

Vote with your feet and find another job if you don't like the way your current none is going?

Deadlysinner · 28/02/2019 20:49

To at least be in charge of a service area where I have experience and my colleague has none and a better pay review after several years with the same company and working 14.5 hour days including commute.

In my company you wouldn't be eligible for promotion if you were a year out of performance review, you'd need at least 2 high rankings in a row (I.e two straight years of high performance and it sounds like you only have one)

I think you've done really well to turn things around though. Most people don't make it through performance reviews, they either leave or are managed out. I think you should be really proud of yourself and focus on building on your success to prove that you can continue to improve.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 28/02/2019 20:51

Uh huh. Tough one.

Maybe they feel that you need to prove yourself for a bit longer after your previous poor performance?

pinotnoirismyjam · 28/02/2019 20:53

Tbf you're only 12 months past a period when you were underperforming. They've recognised your performance with a fairly decent financial reward, but probably want to see more than a year's high performance before promoting you.

PuzzlingPuzzle · 28/02/2019 20:53

I mean this kindly but unlike you, who by your admission was nearly sacked and on a performance review plan only just over a year ago, does your colleague have an unbroken and long record of good performance? If so that’s probably why they were promoted. But look how far you’ve come in a year- from being on an improvement plan to above average across the board, a pay rise and a bonus!! You’ve done really well, be pleased and proud of yourself.

greenflamingo · 28/02/2019 20:53

Agree with above. Great to have turned it around and achieved a bonus. You need a couple of years of solid performance. And ask the questions now when you’ll be setting objectives - “what needs to happen this year for me to progress?” etc etc

Well done though!

BoomBoomsCousin · 28/02/2019 20:53

I can see why that could sting. I think you need to ask yourself if you're being realistic, given you are only a year away from having been on a performance review. You should probably ask your manager what you need to do to get promoted in the next year and see if it seems like you have a fair chance.

But if you are being realistic about being as good as your promoted colleague and a better fit yet you've been passed over, start looking elsewhere. Those kinds of attitudes only change when the people do, so unless the people who decide on promotions are likely to leave, you're best off away from them.

DNAshelicase · 28/02/2019 20:54

A few grand bonus and you nearly got sacked last year? You sound like a brat

bababoom100 · 28/02/2019 21:21

It could be that because you were on a performance review your card has been marked and you might never be considered for promotion. Things arent meant to work that way but they do sometimes as people have long memories. You might be better moving to a new job or another team who aren't aware of your history, capitalising on the fact your most recent performance has been good.

Chloemol · 28/02/2019 22:22

You were underperforming, and have now turned that round which is good but was that the same for the person promoted? As others have said it’s highly unlikely you would be promoted within a year of underperforming. Just carry on as you are and hopefully something else will come up. You only have yourself to blame if you were so badly underperforming that you had a three month performance review. Put it behind you and work forwards

MotherOfDragons90 · 01/03/2019 19:22

Wanna swap? You can have my civil service 1% and il take a few thousand!

ScreamingValenta · 01/03/2019 19:27

Well done on turning your performance round.

I think what you need to do now is agree some more challenging objectives with your line manager, focusing specifically on what you need to achieve and demonstrate to be considered for promotion.

My instinct would say that they don't think you're ready yet because it's only a year since you were on a performance review. Focus now on getting a good development plan in place to build your capabilities.

daisypond · 01/03/2019 19:28

"couple of thousand bonus and a couple of thousand pay rise" - wow, that's so good. It wouldn't matter how many outstanding performance reviews you get in the company I work for, there's never any bonuses or pay rises for them. You seem to be doing more than fine.

elessar · 01/03/2019 19:32

Yes sorry I think you're being unrealistic to think you would go from performance review to promotion in under 12 months.

Well done on turning things around but I don't think you've been at all unfairly treated. I'd focus on keeping up the good work for another year and if you maintain strong performance you might get promoted next year.

greendale17 · 01/03/2019 19:33

It could be that because you were on a performance review your card has been marked and you might never be considered for promotion.

^I agree

greendale17 · 01/03/2019 19:34

OP you sound so entitled for someone who was on a performance review a year ago

YouBumder · 01/03/2019 19:36

Think of the positives, that’s great where you were on performance management a year ago. Hopefully this time next year you’ll reap the rewards

ScreamingValenta · 01/03/2019 19:37

That's a bit harsh, greendale17. Most companies prefer employees who have ambition and want to progress. If OP continues to perform well, this shouldn't mark her card in the long term - if it does, it's a reflection on the employer, not OP.

Gina2012 · 02/03/2019 06:04

Think about how entitled you sound

Think

Now ffs do NOT transfer that to the workplace

Or you'll never get promoted again
