Do some people know how rude they are?

So a woman stops me in asda, looks at my 19mo in the troey and then looks at my 31 week pregnant bump and says "oh, you're going to have your hands full, don't worry, it'll help you lose that extra weight."
Erm, charming. And I never know what to say in situations where people are rude but are smiling and chatting, I feel like it would be weird to say or do anything other than just carry on smiling at them.
Do these people even know what they are saying when it comes out their mouth?

A better filter wouldn’t have changed it. She wasn’t being rude, you thought she was. Before professionally being offended became a thing that would have been considered a perfectly innocuous thing for one woman to say to another.

Sounds like a pretty rude comment to me.

I work in a customer-facing job, and while most people are delightful, there are some who you can just tell are habitually rude. I think they are the type of people who usually go around complaining that other people are always rude to them. They get people’s backs up and it creates a vicious circle. I don’t think they know that they would get on better if they were more polite - and I don’t think they know how unpleasant it is interacting with them.
