The narrative that the country is hopelessly divided is very unhelpfully driven more by people on the Left it seems to me.

It depends on the disagreement.

Approximately 100 years ago, there were major political arguments in Ireland wrt the proposed treaty with the British. It pitted family member against family member and resulted in a civil war.

Disagreement on whether tax bands should be changed or whether nationalisation of railways is the way to go, is unlikely to result in the same level of division.

Basically, it depends on the importance of the issue and the potential impact of one view prevailing over the other.

Look at the words used. It's now perfectly normal to call people traitors, nazi's, thick etc.

It's horrible. It's gone beyond political disagreement and descended into petty tribalism.

It's the same as on YouTube where any form of debate will be headlined xxx destroys yyy. When you watch it they'd just had a relatively normal debate
