Hypocrisy? Royalty promoting charities

Snog · 27/02/2019 09:37

Is it not rank hypocrisy for Royalty to be doing "charitable work" promoting that ordinary folk donate to charities whilst choosing to spend their own money on holidays, racehorses and other luxuries?

If they believe in charities why not give them their own money?

They do give their own money. Some aren't just asking for money, they want the cause highlighted. Granted poorer people give more, % wise.

Personally, I want our Royal Family to have the respect (and envy) of the rest of the World and money is part of that.

Pomp and ceremony is one of the last things we do well.

WorraLiberty · 27/02/2019 09:46

Have they sat you down and told you they don't give their own money to charity? Confused

ShatnersWig · 27/02/2019 09:48

You do realise a lot of charities benefit hugely because of the profile the royals can give them?

The Prince's Trust is a fabulous charity. Who founded it with his own money? Oh yes, that'll be Charles Windsor.

I assure you they don't! The British royal family has been a long standing joke for years, just read the foreign press. Kate's arrival has done nothing to improve that, maybe Meghan won't be such a joke.
It's embarrassing to read the comments about people who are supposed to "represent" us. They really don't.

Bumblebeezy · 27/02/2019 09:51

This is an incredibly short sighted view. YABVU.

Sparklesocks · 27/02/2019 10:34

I’m not a royalist but hasn’t it always been part of their ‘role’ to do so?

They bring press/attention to good causes, it means the chosen charity has a wider reach than they did before. Surely a good thing?
Also why are you particularly focused on the royals, do you feel the same way about celebrities, politicians etc who do charity work? if so, why call the royals out specifically?

Grumblepants · 27/02/2019 10:37

Why is this just picking on royals? Couldn't you say the same for any celebrity who endorses a charity? Or do you just not like royals.

bruffin · 27/02/2019 10:39

I worked for a Royal charity and knew what the patron did for the charity and the donation they made YABU

StinkyCandle · 27/02/2019 13:34

you could argue that the celeb is not getting his money from the tax payer, unlike the royal family - even if some people seem to believe that royal properties, assets and bank accounts have nothing to do with the state because they like to be mugs.

Mookatron · 27/02/2019 13:43

Well, it keeps the system that keeps them rich going, doesn't it. Much better for them to do good work of their choosing to help the 'deserving poor' instead of endorsing a proper system of taxation that sends the unfortunate message everybody deserves the same standard of living they have.

Sirzy · 27/02/2019 13:47

As well as what others have said that visit/invite to an event can be a massive boost for the volunteers. I was invited to a reception at Buckingham palace when younger through my voluntary work and it was generally a feel good thing and nice to be recognised with something a bit special

SilviaSalmon · 27/02/2019 13:48

You are scraping the barrel here OP Hmm. Are you seriously saying it’s hypocritical to do any charitable work if you’re rich?

Royal patronage is designed to highlight the charity and raise awareness of its work. It does an immense amount of good.

Also, why would you assume it’s specifically aimed at “ordinary folk”. In fact fundraisers etc will sell more tickets and command higher prices because the royal patron is attending.

Further, how do you know that the royals don’t donate money as well as their time?

What do YOU do for charity?

kaytee87 · 27/02/2019 13:49

The royal family do an incredible amount for charity.
Don't be ridiculous.
