To give pfb some chocolate cake?

I'm making DD's first birthday cake. What is the pfb etiquette here? Do I a) make a big gooey chocolate cake that will be delicious and let her have a little bit or b) make some kind of baby friendly low sugar healthy-ish cake like banana cake or something that won't be as nice but DD and the other babies can dig into.

Which one will get the most judgement/eye rolls?

Make a normal cake that you and the other guests will enjoy. Give the baby a small finger-sized piece. If your DD is anything like my babies were, she will probably just squish most of it up anyway, and total sugar consumption will be minimal.

Oh I know she will be fine. I'm more worried about my lovely cake not getting eaten Grin

Do not give her delicious, gooey chocolate cake, OP!!

Yes, it's cute when it's her first taste on her first birthday. Fast forward five years, and you will always have to share your last delicious slice of cake or squidgy brownie with her.... it was so much simpler when she didn't know!!! (I'm not bitter!!) Wink

What does “PFB” mean?!

GroggyLegs · 26/02/2019 22:08

My PBF had a banana cake but that's because I love banana cake Blush

It had cream cheese frosting (droooool).

Perfect First Born rabbit

E20mom · 26/02/2019 22:09

I offered some to mine and she refused it

E20mom · 26/02/2019 22:09

Oh I always thought it was precious first born Grin

I made mine a Victoria sponge for her first birthday. She refused to try it. In fact she refused all cake until she was three, the little weirdo.

My boys are allergic to dairy - for their first birthday I made dairy free cupcakes for everyone. They had a little bit of a cupcake and it was like they were drunk. Didn’t have cake again until their second birthday - they were ill so no party, I bought in a dairy free cake and they had little pieces of it alongside our bigger pieces for a few days until it was gone - no cake since. They’ve never had chocolate - sourced some dairy free hot chocolate at Christmas and you’d think I was trying to poison them.

They think watermelon and peas are treats - am trying to keep it that way as long as possible!

Give her the Chocolate cake! I’m sure she will love it.
I sent my son with a massive chocolate cake to nursery for his first birthday 😳 the kids all loved it-fed the whole place as it was about 8” tall.
A healthy balanced diet is all about moderation, not restriction. (And make sure you have about 10x the cloths/wipes you think you’ll need for after 😂)

I made almond macaroons (not the fancy french ones) because we were having a quiet one and I didn’t fancy leaving us alone with a cake. I did ice them to spell happy birthday at least. We have a bad track record for eating all the cake. I did reduce the sugar in them, it’s true. Baby thought they were marvellous. It wasn’t his first taste of baked goods (thanks grandma, his childminder) but it’s a rare enough thing. He’s a fiend for the sweet stuff unfortunately, would live on fruit if he could.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 26/02/2019 22:20

I don't allow refined sugar or in fact any processed food barring bits of cheese before 1 but on their first birthdays I made all three of mine a chocolate cake. They loved it! It is fine - my 1yos will not have any refined sugar again till Easter and then after that probably not till their grandmothers' birthdays in the summer. It's perfectly okay to have limited sweet treats.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 26/02/2019 22:22

These are the 1yos' cakes from last weekend. Everybody enjoyed them,!

I don’t know anyone in real life who would care if their one year old had a little bit of cake at a birthday party.
Mumsnet is insane Cake 😂

lumpinmythroat · 26/02/2019 22:43

@drinkygin

I know 😂😂 it’s a bit of cake Confused

I came out the kitchen the other night to find my four year old licking his ice lolly then giving his ten month old brother a lick.

A small treat isn’t going to harm a child Hmm

GroggyLegs · 27/02/2019 07:44

@E20 you may well be right!

Although my first born is completely perfect AND precious so either will suffice Grin
