To have bashed this drone?

Went for walk/picnic along the river today with DH and our 3 small DC. While we were eating lunch a group of boys maybe 9-11 years old appeared and were a short distance from us climbing an old tree that had half fallen in the water. Eventually they egged each other on and a few of them stripped off and were jumping into the river. We couldn't see a great deal but could hear them clear enough. DS7 was truly fascinated!

A few minutes after the boys start jumping in along comes a drone flying low. It's a giant bloody thing and comes right down over our heads. DH starts waving at and it carries on to where the boys are and is just hovering. Now the boys are hooting and hollering at it while throwing stones. I go running over yelling put your clothes on that thing is taking pictures of you! The drone is now hovering and zipping around a few feet over our heads and making no move to leave. I pick up a fallen branch and start swinging at it and managed to make contact. It ended up in the river.

Lo and behold the owner shows up ten minutes later in absolute rage saying he's going to report me to the police for destroying his drone. I tell him it wasn't safe to be flying so damn close to people and he was clearly taking pictures of naked children. He says they were in public and he can take photos if he wants. We ended up leaving with the gaggle of boys following us (I think at this point they were all fairly spooked).

It really wasn't the afternoon I expected and now I'm wondering if I'll be contacted by the police!

He was possibly watching the live feed from the front seat of his car with his hand in his pants.

LizB62A · 23/02/2019 19:10

You should have reported him to the police as he was clearly breaking the law.

azulmariposa · 23/02/2019 19:12

He was breaking the law. Drones must not be flown within 50 metres of people, property or vehicles.
Also sounds really dodgy that he was so blazè about filming the children!

Jaxhog · 23/02/2019 19:16

Good for you op!

littledoll33 · 23/02/2019 19:21

Good for you OP. I would have done the same.

Then I would have reported the arsey man to the police.

There are a number of drone laws.........

There are a few fundamental rules that all drone operators are required to follow in the UK, such as keeping your drone in sight at all times, and never flying it above 400ft. It is also forbidden to fly a drone over a congested area or within 150ft of a person, vehicle or building not under your control.

From gov.co.uk.

He was in the wrong.

Sparklingbrook · 23/02/2019 19:22

I am unsure of the sequence of events. So drone owner would see naked children jumping in the river, go home anfd get his drone to film them or something?

Were they completely naked? I can't see why they would do that.

It was quite warm today here but not warm enough for naked swimming in a river.

LittlePaintBox · 23/02/2019 19:24

How is he going to report you to the police? He has no idea who you are!

I'd have done just the same in the circumstances, very poor behaviour on his part.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 23/02/2019 19:24

He was breaking the law by filming so close to people, regardless of what he was filming.

You have likely committed criminal damage to his drone.

Given the contents of the footage, I shouldn't think he'd be reporting this, but if he does, neither of the crimes will "cancel out" the other.

starfishmummy · 23/02/2019 19:25

dronebasher I'm sure that you accidentally hit it because you were trying to protect yourself as you thought it was going to hit you...Wink

FuerzaAreaUruguay · 23/02/2019 19:27

My mate smashed up a drone that buzzed her in her garden. It was her neighbour's. He couldn't do anything because he was breaking the law by doing that.

BMW6 · 23/02/2019 19:34

Well he's certainly not going to complain to the Police is he. The fact that you were able to hit his drone with a branch held in your hands shows that it was far too close to you!

mrcharlie · 23/02/2019 19:34

It's a shame that drones are now so despised. I don't have one, but the video footage on youtube never ceases to amaze me.
Don't they write straight to a SD Card? If that's the case the footage would possibly have survived.
Strange behaviour tho' by the drones operator.

Guavaf1sh · 23/02/2019 19:37

Well done congratulations!! Also I agree with those saying report him to the police as well

KittensAndCake · 23/02/2019 19:39

This happened to me too - I took a broom to it 😡

bouncydog · 23/02/2019 19:39

Well done you. Far too many drone owners using them to spy on others. This one sounds very suspect filming children. I would report to police.

HavelockVetinari · 23/02/2019 19:41

Well done you, he was obviously a perv to be taking photos of naked kids, not to mention the fact that he was breaking the law. Dirty piece of paedo filth, it should be him in the river. Angry

DoingTheBestICan · 23/02/2019 19:43

Some twat was flying a drone over my garden today, it kept swooping over me as I was pegging the washing out. I couldn't reach it to whack it but I did flick the V's at it, childish I know but it pissed me off.

historymystery · 23/02/2019 19:46

you did right thing! I would contact the police myself as others have advised.

sonjadog · 23/02/2019 19:47

If he was indeed taking photos of naked children, I doubt very much he is going to report you breaking his drone to the police.

mrcharlie · 23/02/2019 19:47

@Bouncydog I just did a search of drone spying after reading your comment...Yes you are quite right.

Found this comment

Dad shoots down drone 'spying on his sunbathing daughter' - and is arrested by cops. William Meredith then told the drone's owner: "If you cross my sidewalk, there's gonna be another shooting"

I used to be into URBEX, hence the fascination for drones

paintinmyhairAgain · 23/02/2019 19:48

what a perv, you did the right thing op

Thisisawelltroddenpath · 23/02/2019 19:49

I have been on a beach where there was a person clearly looking at me with a drone. It is not nice and if I could have have batted it down I would!

llangennith · 23/02/2019 19:51

I'd have done the same as you OP. And I certainly wouldn't bother reporting myself to the police. What for?

Etino · 23/02/2019 19:52

Good for you OP
@ILoveMaxiBondi a chilling thought.

AWishForWingsThatWork · 23/02/2019 19:55

He was breaking the law; very dangerous to be flying them so close to people, and taking pictures of naked children being children isn't on.

Report it yourself.
