To wonder why Scotland isn’t more popular as a holiday destination

Just been watching that hidden Scotland programme. I promise you I don’t work for the tourist board.Grin

I lived there as a forces child for a few years and was born there previously. Loved it but my mother hated it and refused to ever go back so we never did. Know nobody else who has ever holidayed there but oh my goodness it’s beautiful and seems to have everything- history, beaches, mountains, wildlife.....

Why do we all flock to Cornwall and the Lake District?

Is it the weather? Can’t just be the distance as the above are long distances for many.

On the back of that can you give me the best bits.

Cornwall is a worse drive though. Always go by train.

Oh no we are driving is it hellish? Furthest we have driven is Dorset and that isn't too bad

FindPrimeLorca · 23/02/2019 15:28

Down to Dorset is fine, but the road (there’s only really one) beyond that down through Devon and into Cornwall can be hell. People set off at all sorts of insane times of day in order to avoid the summer tailbacks.

MrsJayy · 23/02/2019 15:31

We did do Paignton one year when kids were young we went through the night I am sure it will be fine Confused

BarbarianMum · 23/02/2019 15:34

The worst is Saturdays as these are "changeover " days (lots of holiday properties let Sat to Sat). Tailbacks from Bristol onwards ime. Sundays also bad as people go for the weekend. Probably better in term time and midweek though.

Last year we went to the Scillies by train then boat. It was bliss. This year train down to Portsmouth then car hire. Costs more but worth every penny.

BarbarianMum · 23/02/2019 15:34

Portsmouth? Plymouth.

ZigZagZombie · 23/02/2019 15:36

Ach I'm a wee ginger racist and my ginger-clad haggis is trained to attack an English accent.

I'm properly greeting at the person who would never visit, but has "read there are nice views". Fuck me. Ugh. I can't imagine being so insular. Where on earth does that attitude arise from? Lambeth?

AmIthatbloodycold · 23/02/2019 15:37

@Redglitter Absolutely. What a load of crap. Tartan in chain stores ffs

I'm still laughing at the notion that holiday makers don't come to ScotlandGrin

I've just been in Glasgow city centre. It's February. It's hoaching with visitors Grin

MrsJayy · 23/02/2019 15:38

We are going out of termtime so hopefully will be alright. Scilly looks beautiful I watched a programme and thought it looked idyllic.

Sheogorath · 23/02/2019 15:40

Yeah, the Windows of Debenhams and WH Smith are filled with Tartan. Last time I went into HMV in Glasgow to buy a CD, all they sold was kilts.

MrsJayy · 23/02/2019 15:44

Really Ive neverseen Tartan in Debenhams windows and HMV selling actual kilts Grin

ZigZagZombie · 23/02/2019 15:46

I bought a tartan faux-kilt in Tesco in Perth last year. It's clearly endemic.

Tidy2018 · 23/02/2019 15:48

Did anyone hear Susan Calman on News Quiz Extra, describing how there are nets to attract and trap midges, which are then squished into food for the birds that need to eat the midges?

MrsJayy · 23/02/2019 15:51

So you bought a skirt in tesco Wink

ZigZagZombie · 23/02/2019 15:52

BUT IT WAS TARTAN! Couldn't find any quinoa or avocados. Just bloody tartan. Wall to wall tartan. I usually have to travel south of the wall for groceries because I can only get tartan clothes up here.

FredMerc · 23/02/2019 15:53

"I hate to say this, but during the referendum for independence those pictures of bare-chested, aggressive, snarling Independents who give the impression that they hate we English and would like to skin us alive were off-putting."

I cannot stand that someone has asked about visiting Scotland (I am Scottish living in Scotland) and so many people have said we hate English ppl. That makes my blood boil! Scotland voted NO to independence, the majority of Scots said no! All the English people continually creating a stereotypical mythical image of us hating them (with no grounds what so ever) plays into the nonsense from the bare chested, snarling, aggressive independents that you imagine roam the mountains living wildly among the haggis. We don't hate English, we voted NO to independence, please let it go! Hmm

Skade · 23/02/2019 15:53

I bloody love Scotland. My dad was Glaswegian, and when he died last year we went up from Dorset to scatter his ashes at the Mull of Kintyre (his funeral song). We spent a few days just driving around, Glasgow, Loch Lomond, and I just fell in love. Heading back up this year to explore Highlands, I can't wait, it is the most beautiful place.

derxa · 23/02/2019 15:55

I loved Susan Calman learning to curl and crying about the golden eagle.
She also did a funny radio programme learning to love things like cricket and hill climbing.

MrsJayy · 23/02/2019 15:59

Ive not seen this weeks yet I love Susan and her jumpers and not a bit of Tartan on her cleary needs to get herself to TescoGrin

N0rdicStar · 23/02/2019 16:46

It's such a good program.

I'd love to visit Shetland. What stops me?
It's the drive and 12 hour ferry Envy I think I might try Aviemore this year.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/02/2019 16:48

Or Orkney. One day we will make it!

MrsJayy · 23/02/2019 16:54

Aviemore is a bit of a hole tbh sorry any aviemore people try Oban or Fortwilliam lois you can fly to Shetland my friend did it last year

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/02/2019 16:56

Fort Augustus is nice.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/02/2019 17:06

There's a Waitrose in my wee town, they have extra fancy tartan and bagpipes and school kids handling the baked goods

Stopwoofing · 23/02/2019 17:11

We loved holidays in Scotland so much we moved here, don’t think we could happily live many other places now.
