18 year old ds is off down motorway on a trip and his 18 year old mate is driving I'm petrified.

Presumably his mate has a license? I'm not sure why you are concerned?
Is it planned or have they taken off without enough cash?

My 18yr old son drove himself and 3 friends from West Yorkshire to London for a big football match, and back same day, the year he passed his test - they were fine but it was a long day for me!!

Terrifying, isn't it? Like watching babies playing with razor blades. Remember to breathe...

YANBU. This causes me no end of worry

@hiding I think you do know why the OP is worried

Stcatherine · 22/02/2019 09:34

If it helps my Ds flew his first solo flight in a small plane at 17, I just tried not to think about what might happen! He was fine.

I remember that fear when my 18yr old dd jumped into a car with her friend who'd just passed and a couple of other mates, they were off to views unis a couple of hours away. I worried until they arrived home.

You just have to remember that they're sensible kids and keep yourself occupied.

Motorways are the safest roads to drive on.

Hearthside · 22/02/2019 22:12

They will be fine op but i do understand what you are saying .My DS is slightly older in his early 20's but only passed his test towards end last year .He goes everywhere with his DP in his car .First time he went down motorway i was the same .But i have driven with him when he has come down to visit and he is a incredibly sensible driver so that reassured me and i don't worry now. It does get easier ,honestly Smile.

My DS passed his test and 4 days later drove from Washington DC to Seattle. It took 5 days but he did divert a bit to visit tourist sites like a national park or two!
I was a bag of nerves until he called to say he arrived safely, but he became a very confident driver very quickly.
