AIBU to replace all the old carpets before putting house on market - difference is £500

About to put our house on the market in a bit of a hurry. We knew the main carpet (lounge, diner, stairs, landing) would need replacing first thanks carpet moths so we've just had a quote for a serviceable but not marvellous carpet.

My AIBU is should we spend an extra £500 and replace the remaining old, but undamaged, carpets at the same time to help sell. If you're a buyer, would you prefer new carpeting throughout?

Do it for that price. What people saying ‘the new people might want to rip it out anyway’ haven’t taken into account is that there’s a difference between wanting to replace the carpets and having to replace them. One is a luxury and can wait if you need to spend cash elsewhere first and have carpet that, while not to your personal taste, is new, clean and you can live with. The other is a guaranteed expense and also limits your flexibility (need to book fitters ASAP rather than at a convenient time; need to decorate first to avoid damaging new carpets etc.)

If I saw noticeably damaged carpet in a property I’d be mentally calculating my discount on the asking price, and it would definitely be more than £500.

Normal wear and tear I might not bother but carpet moths YES because you don't want to give the impression of an infected house (you can say it's dealt with but there would be doubt in my mind. If it's old damage why haven't you replaced it etc?)

I did my stairs and landing this year for £120 in a quality remnant so I can believe it.

I'm thinking of replacing the carpets in my flat. They cost about £4000, 20 years ago, for wool carpets with underlay and fitting. This was for three bedrooms, upstairs and downstairs hallways, and stairs. Even allowing for cheap carpet, I'm a bit taken aback that a house can be done for £500. I'm expecting to pay more than that just for fitting.

I believe the OP said it would be £500 extra to do the whole house rather than just the rooms where the damage is severe that they intend to do anyway.

Ie £x they are going to spend anyway, £x + £500 would do the whole house including carpet that's not damaged but that is just old.

So the £500 is on top of the cost of the carpet OP alresy intends to replace.

Yes, it's £500 for a small extra area rather than the whole space. The carpet we're looking at is firmly in the medium range for quality and price but is currently on a half price sale.

Thank you all for your comments, I think we may just go for it and do the lot to save potential problems during selling Smile
