Mum/Mom

I often see posts on here where people use 'Mom' instead of 'Mum'. I always thought Mom was just an American thing and I know some Americans use these boards. However I see it often enough to wonder if there's parts of the UK that use Mom not Mum and it's not just the odd American on here? I know that 'Mam' is a thing in other parts of the UK, but I had no idea 'Mom' was. Can someone please enlighten me?

And Caspiana I'm South Birmingham and it's mom around here.

MamaWeasel · 21/02/2019 19:55

Yep, you rumbled me, I was brought up in Solihull..... My mother will not countenance being addressed as Mom.......

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 21/02/2019 19:55

Oh, I am south Birmingham too, not sure if that makes a difference. Bartley green.

newnameforthis7 · 21/02/2019 19:56

YEP. It's MOM in the midlands.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 21/02/2019 20:00

I think there's a huge difference

I'm South Birmingham and DH is north east Birmingham, with a Solihull postcode dontcha know and he sounds so much more brummie than me and all of his family

They all still say mom though. Just the accent is much stronger from his way.
And they really roll their rrrrrrs. Which drives me nuts.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 21/02/2019 20:00
  • And all his family do too i mean.
Jezzifishie · 21/02/2019 20:01

I've moved around a bit - in my experience, it's Mum in Leicester and Coventry, Mom in Stafford, Rugeley, Birmingham, Wolverhampton.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 21/02/2019 20:01

iputascrewinthetuna

I grew up not far from Bartley Green. Moved now but still travel through their daily on the way to work.

Malibucyprus · 21/02/2019 20:05

I’m Stafford/Wolverhampton way and I’m a Mom.

swampytiggaa · 21/02/2019 20:06

Black Country wench here 😉 I’m a mom and I have a mom and she had a mom.

beanaseireann · 21/02/2019 20:10

My 95 year old grand aunt says Mom when talking about her long dead mother , as did her siblings.
She's from the south west of Ireland.

GroggyLegs · 21/02/2019 20:13

I tried being a North Birmingham 'Mum'.

But I lost the battle and I am indeed MOMMY.

Dothehappydance · 21/02/2019 20:13

I'm from near Birmingham and we say mom but spell it mum still.

Same for me. I now live in the ne and it is Mam here, mil calls me that but my children say Mom.

To say Mum feels really forced.

MaryShelley1818 · 21/02/2019 20:14

North East here so Mam or Mammy, although DS is just starting to talk and says Mama and Dada which is lovely.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 21/02/2019 20:58

@Menarefrommarsitwouldseem just think we could know or recognise each other!

DuploRelatedInjury · 21/02/2019 22:55

@Caspiana I'm East Birmingham but I have family from South Birmingham (Billesley) and they all say Mom!

CandyflossKid · 21/02/2019 22:57

Staffordshire here and it's always been Mum

DappledThings · 21/02/2019 23:08

I lived in Solihull from the ages of 11-18 and never knew anyone say or write Mom.

First I saw it in UK was a school friend who called herself Mommy on FB. Then I started hearing about it being a general Brummie thing. Definitely not B91 or B93 though!

Imperfectsusan · 21/02/2019 23:30

Nobody said it matters and I've never seen it in here. If it is old news, find a more interesting thread.

I'm interested it is a WM one. I'm from the WM and never heard it.

bridgetreilly · 21/02/2019 23:33

The Midlands is a pretty big and diverse area. Plenty of us here say 'Mum', but yes, some say 'Mom'.

CoachBombay · 21/02/2019 23:37

Wales here it's "Mam" or "Mami" but some say "Mum" or "Mummy" what's worse here is the grandparents terms lol

Nan
Nanny
Nani
Mamgu
Grandmother

Tad
Tadcu
Bampi
Bamps
Grandad

It's fucking endless lol but Dad is always Dad 😂

myrtleWilson · 21/02/2019 23:44

I'm a Solihull girl and we all used mom...

Dothehappydance · 22/02/2019 00:00

Definitely was a B91 thing.

seething1234 · 22/02/2019 00:40

Parts of Ireland. ... more so in the west and sounds similar to the Irish word for it
