My car has been clamped

Superwomansuglysister · 20/02/2019 16:12

I've just come downstairs to collect ds from holiday club and my car has been clamped.

I have called the people who done it and it's for driving into the congestion zone in 2018, I have recently moved and had no prior warning that I owed money.
They are now saying I have to give them £500 or they will take my car, I don't have that kind of money and need my car to get to work.
Any advice on what I can do?

Did you update all of your details with the DVLA when you moved?

Nomdejeur · 20/02/2019 16:15

How did they know your car would be there?

Gth1234 · 20/02/2019 16:24

That's Ken Livingstone for you. Do you live in London? Is it genuine? Might your regno have been cloned?

Superwomansuglysister · 20/02/2019 17:01

Yes I live in London and have changed all details with the DVLA

Maybe they are trying it on. Double check all the details.

ButDoYouAvocado · 21/02/2019 07:07

It really depends WHEN you changed them. If you changed them when you moved and have received nothing there may be some recourse, if you changed them later than that and they've just caught up with you then it's your fault. I did similar myself unfortunately. Honestly thought I'd changed everything but I hadn't.

As some who runs a transport company I know they send several chasing up letters , and then they send in enforcement officers to collect payment

YequeTuZainti · 21/02/2019 08:13

Are you actually guilty of the offense?

For the future: it's generally good to set up your general daily life with enough contingency/redundancy/flex to absorb single points of failure. A car is one example of a single point of failure - you could come out and find all the tyres have been slashed or you left the lights on and the battery is dead, or an HGV crashed into it. Or you could get an eye infection requiring medication with eye drops that make your vision too poor to drive with for 3 weeks. So you don't set things up so as for that to be a disaster, but make sure that critical daily activities like getting to childminders or getting to work have functional backup options like walking, public transport, or keep a bike. It's relatively advanced adult skills but sensible to acquire.

That's Ken Livingstone for you

Ken Livingstone was not Mayor of London in 2018 Confused

Brilliant!

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 21/02/2019 08:20

I think you'll need to pay it if you want them to remove the clamp. Sorry op. And did you ask them how they knew your car would be outside nursery?

fedupski · 21/02/2019 08:47

You need to ring congestion charging customer service and ask for details. Do you believe you've paid or should be exempt from payment, if not there's a good chance you will have to pay the bailiff and then attempt to appeal for your charge notice to be restarted from the beginning as you didn't receive any of the paperwork. You're going to need evidence such as the date you informed DVLA after moving and details of post redirects to have any chance of getting some of your money back. You might also want to check that the DVLA definitely amended your details as you've managed to miss quite a lot of letters by the time it got to the bailiffs.

Superwomansuglysister · 21/02/2019 11:33

I'm in temporary accommodation, so have moved twice in the last year.
The ticket was for Jan 2018, I'm not disputing I may have driven in it but I honestly don't remember doing so or even receiving a notice.

I will give congestion a call today just to see the exact date and time.
The car was parked outside my house and when I spoke to the bailiff, they said they we're there looking for someone else and I happend to drive in, so obviously my details haven't been updated somewhere along the line.

@YequeTuZainti I would always be able to collect my dcs, unfortunately without a car I would no longer be able to work in my current position as there is no public transport, and I wouldn't be able to afford taxis' or extra childcare.

That's Ken Livingstone for you.

Is that what he's doing these days, working for a car clamping firm. That's a bit of a comedown, it was only 11 years ago he was Mayor of London.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 21/02/2019 14:01

What time warp are you in?

Notsofunnythesecondtime · 21/02/2019 14:04

I think what was meant was Ken Livingstone instigated the congestion zone
