To think contraception shouldn’t just be a woman’s responsibility?

Just watched an episode of GP behind closed doors where a man asked for a vasectomy. The GP was unable to refer him because she said his wife hadn’t tried all the other options first.

How is it is wife’s responsibility? She had tried the pill but it was making her ill and didn’t want a coil. Why should a woman having an invasive procedure that changes her hormones be prioritised when a man wants a vasectomy?

misogyny.

izekiah · 20/02/2019 15:54

perhaps the GP assessed him and she didn’t find that he truly wanted a vasectomy.

whether we like it or not ; most contraceptions are for women and until that changes women will have to be responsible for contraception.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 20/02/2019 15:59

Yes misogyny.

From what the episode showed (which I appreciate may have been edited) he asked for a vasectomy as he didn’t want any more children and the pill was making his wife ill. He was told until she had tried the injection or a coil he couldn’t be referred.

Bearing in mind that it's always the woman who suffers most from an unwanted pregnancy, it seems reasonable not to rely entirely on the man.

Choud1616 · 20/02/2019 16:07

Whaaaat?? Is this standard procedure?? My husband is planning on asking for a vasectomy soon - if he gets refused on these grounds I will tear the place down!

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 20/02/2019 16:07

Whether you like it or not, it is up the owner of the body to safeguard it. You can’t expect everyone else to be responsible.

In the same way a woman shouldn’t rely 100% on a man 'standing by her' (quaint phrase I know) , neither should a man expect 100% to believe a woman when she says her contraceptive choice is infallible.

APurpleSquirrel · 20/02/2019 16:10

That's sounds really odd - but I wonder if different drs/PCTs treat it differently?
My DH got a vasectomy last year, we'd decided after DC2 we didn't want any more & I didn't want to go back on the pill, nor play side effect roulette with the other options. DH was completely on board & he got the referral & op a month or so after the original appt. DC2 was approximately 3mths.
however in our neighbouring county friends in the same situation got told they had to wait till DC2 was over 6mths before they'd do the referral & op????

Toupholsterornot · 20/02/2019 16:13

How does the gp know she hasn't tried. Surely they aren't allowed to check ever records if they aren't seeing her as a patient. Surely the husband says yes she tried everything....

Blooto · 20/02/2019 16:13

This sounds very odd to me. I was/am happy with the DCs we have, went to doctor and asked for a vasectomy, and was given a vasectomy. The doctor never even mentioned other types of contraception, and there was no dialogue with my DW either as far as I can recall. I'm sure I'm not a unique case so presume there was something else going on with the man in this case.

Purplepricklesalloverhisback · 20/02/2019 16:18

She did say the policy had changed a few months ago and so it may be new but the episode must have been filmed a while ago.

That's utter rubbish on the part of the doctor. My partner asked for a vasectomy and was referred straightaway (first to counselling, now waiting for appointment for the op).

GregoryPeckingDuck · 20/02/2019 16:26

The man may have lied or the GP may have been concerned about the risk or irreversible side effects.

feelingverylazytoday · 20/02/2019 16:47

It could also be a funding issue.
As far as personal responsibility goes, thats between the couple. I chose to take the pill and then to be sterilised, because I wanted to be in control of my own fertility.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 20/02/2019 16:55

The only person I trust to not get me pregnant is me.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 20/02/2019 17:05

That does sound very weird. I've never been on any form of hormonal or implanted birth control and, according to my spouse, what I was using was never brought up during the process of getting his snip other than general information of having to use other birth control before he got the second all-clear. I would find it very odd that his choice not to have more kids could be blocked by my medical choices.
