Boss telling people I'm pregnant without my knowledge or consent...

Currently halfway through a 3 month FTC working at a very small company. I recently found out I’m pregnant and told my Boss (who is a vile bully) as a courtesy, as I am already having trouble with morning sickness. Other than that I have only told one colleague who I like and really get on with.

I have since found out (although I am not supposed to know) that he has told another colleague who I really do not get along with at all (also a vile bully) and would not have chosen to tell myself, and the recruitment consultant who placed me here. Is that not a breach of confidentiality? The colleague has no HR or H&S responsibilities (and has on several occasions tried to force me to tell her myself) and I had been hoping to work as far along as possible in my pregnancy but obviously the recruiter isn’t going to try and get me work if she knows I’m pregnant...

Is the boss the owner? If so what sort of redress do you want? If he is a vile bully and you are ok temping why not try to pick up another shorter FTC that fits in with your due date? You might have to go to a new agency though as I agree, your current Recruitment agent won't be trying hard to place you.

What is it you’re looking for? I think you’re in a lose-lose situation here.

ChrisPrattsFace · 20/02/2019 11:50

No advice but similar situation.
Due to my work place and health and safety I had to tell my boss, along with three people I worked directly with. I had some time off due to HG and have come back and everyone knows.
Not sure who has told who but found it very frustrating that I had asked those people not to discuss due to problems (and that I was only telling them to help with H&s)
I would hope your recruiter would still find you work, being pregnant shouldn’t change that (but I guess in the real world it probably does)

I'm not sure there is much recourse, unless they stop you working because of it

ChanandlerBongsNubbin · 20/02/2019 12:05

I had been hoping to find a permanent role after this one as I'll still be in my first trimester when I leave here. But now that he's gone and told my recruiter I highly doubt that she's going to put me forward for anything.

In this situation, I wouldn't think it is.

I think that only covers people who work in medical professions.

The only thing that would be illegal is if he was telling people this and either they or him were discriminating against you because of it. So, it wouldn’t be ok for the recruitment consultant to not try to find you work because you’re pregnant, and wouldn’t be legal for companies to not hire you because of it.
