Wanted to know if anyone had Mirena to help with heavy peri-menopausal bleeding. I am quite anemic and the doctor suggested this and wanted to know others experience.

Went to Dr about this very thing last week. I have issues about the very idea of the coil, so am instead embarking on a cocktail of mefanamic and tranexamic acid, plus the pill. She is also sending me for scans and blood tests. I really dont want any of it, but j need the fucking flooding to stop!!!

I had the Mirena before and it was fine twice . But just as contraceptive. Had no issues with heavy bleeding then. First time it was fine but second time it was not inserted properly and I had some issues. Pain, etc.
My main concern now is that I read it can exacerbate menopausal symptoms because it will keep the progesterone hormone artificially high while estrogen is decreasing due the proximity of the menopause.
The amount of blood I loose every period is ridiculous. I've been taking iron supplement for months and still anemic.

It's very effective. Presuming an endometrial sample was normal, it can be used as endometrial protection for HRT to replace the oestrogen too if needed.

It worked wonders for me. Stopped my periods completely, thank God.

Yes - me! Had one put in about 8yrs ago for that very reason! Got the 1st one changed after the recommended 5yrs & currently on my 2nd.

It initially took a while to settle & on the whole, it seemed to do the job - I had very erratic but much lighter periods for the majority of that 1st coil. I still used to get a bit of cramping & mild PMT too, but nothing compared to before. It was great, apart from the lack of a regular cycle & I did sometimes have light bleeds which went on for more than a week, with the gaps inbetween being anything from a few days to a few weeks!

However, for the past couple of years or so, since my 2nd coil, I've had what is at the most 'spotting' (still very random!) & currently haven't had anything whatsoever for 6mths! Having said that, I'm now 48yrs old so am possibly starting actual menopause.

I'd say that it was definitely the right thing for me, but I guess everyone is different. It's worth a try though - you can always get it removed if you don't like it.

Good luck. XXX
