I have been riled up all day! Was dropping my daughter off and couldn't get into my mums road because there was a van parked in the middle, literally dumping its contents out onto the car park next to a bin. Sofas, bags of rubble, wood, boxes. I whipped my phone out and managed to film them, walked straight past filming their faces, the van phone number etc. I was absolutely livid!

The place is notorious for flytipping because it's kinda hidden from the main road so every week there is abandoned mattresses, sofas, bags of builders waste etc.

Anyway I have reported to the council but have since read they won't do anything unless they get two reports about the same incident. I'm gutted, this isn't a one man band trying to make a living this is one of the biggest roofing contractors in the city. I thought about emailing the city newspaper but would they laugh at me in the office? 😂 I wrote to the cities trusted traders too but I don't know if its even relevant to them. I am just sooooo annoyed that people have the audacity to do that right outside someones front door.

Ahhhh please tell me there is something I can do, or failing that please talk me down to at least a semi calm state 😂.

Id be frickin fuming

TidyDancer · 19/02/2019 19:03

Councils do not need two reports of the same incident to prosecute so if they're telling you that keep pushing them. Only issue is that it might be private land so they won't clear it. They can investigate upon landowner's request though.

Readytogogogo · 19/02/2019 19:05

I don't think the newspaper would laugh at you, I think they're your best bet.

HundredMileStare · 19/02/2019 19:11

It's definitely not private land!

Ok so I will send some photos to the newspaper! You don't ask you don't get eh.

As I said it's the fact these are a huge "reputable" company thats really annoying me the most, not some fly by night one man band who has to do things on the cheap to compete.

I'm pretty non dramatic but that is disgusting and I would definitely send the photos to your local paper.

Gingerkittykat · 19/02/2019 19:16

Put it on a local facebook group and name and shame.

Contact your local councillor and see if they will push for action.

VanillaSauce · 19/02/2019 19:23

Tell the papers how the council won't investigate it.

Nottobesoldseparately · 19/02/2019 19:25

Facebook and Twitter are your friend here.

Can you do it on here?
I'm not entirely sure of the rules to be honest.

Corneliusmurphy · 19/02/2019 19:32

there was an report on fly tipping on the news one night and as they panned across the rubbish I noticed the logo of one of our contractors on some of it, I clearly wasn’t the only person to have spotted it as by time I got to work the next day their contract had been cancelled. Got to be worth contacting the media.
Really surprised at the council, one of the local town centres to me ran a massive campaign about how much council tax fly tippers cost everyone and you have clear evidence.

HarrietSchulenberg · 19/02/2019 19:34

When you say you "have since read they won't do anything unless they get two reports about the same incident", where, exactly, did you read it? Was it on the council's own website? Did it include clear video evidence being submitted in the initial report?
A council might not investigate on the basis of one phone call, but two or more phone calls would be better evidence to use in court and would be lesslikely to be someone lying because they bear a grudge.
I'm pretty sure your council would be very intetested in your video evidence as it would be likely to secure a conviction if they decide to prosecute.

Knittedfairies · 19/02/2019 19:39

Perhaps you could try calling the head office of the roofing contractors? It's quite possible they don't know about the fly tipping. Chances are they wouldn't care to be shamed on social media...

HundredMileStare · 19/02/2019 19:45

@HarrietSchulenberg it was on the councils facebook page someone had left a comment saying they had to improve their reporting process because currently it takes two reports to investigate and a reply was made by another quite well known city group explaining it wasn't the councils fault it was a Scottish Government policy... obviously this could all be false but I'll be gutted if that's the case. It's hard enough for one person to catch them at it, never mind two unrelated people.

I did say on the voicemail reporting thing I had a video and photos of the van & culprits, I'm hoping that helps at least!

@Knittedfairies I actually got my dad to call them up, it was a receptionist (I think) who took his details and said they'd get back to him but haven't heard since.

I did wonder if they were doing it as part of the company or just off their own back, but as I was past them I noticed the guy got his phone out to make a phonecall. My mum has checked and said the sofa has disappeared so I'm wondering if they've been told to go back and remove the "evidence". It was quite a unique sofa it wasn't your average cream leather thing so very recognisable from the photos.

Also thank you for the replies it's encouraging to know I'm not just being frothy and it's a legitimate reason to be absolutely livid 😂

Maybe what the council mean is that one eyewitness/word of mouth is insufficient. You have photographic evidence, so do contact the council. If no sign of action then go to the press. I've started to get arsey with local service providers because I'm sick of things in my area falling apart. Why should our amenities be trashed by selfish bar stewards?
Honestly? I'd be very surprised if your local council didn't jump at the chance of a high profile prosecution.

TidyDancer · 19/02/2019 19:51

When I said private, I don't mean owned by an individual necessarily, but if the fly tip is in a car park, it might not be public land. Could be owned jointly by residents or town/parish council (etc). It would affect how much the council can do.
