To not understand why DS's (9) teeth are so yellow?

He's my youngest. Older DC haven't got yellow teeth. Teeth brushed twice a day from the first one appearing as a baby. He doesn't eat or drink stuff which could stain (Fizzy stuff we have rarely). Dentist says teeth are healthy but couldn't answer why they're so yellow.

His friends notice and so have family.

Any ideas?

Can you take him to a different dentist?..if the dentist doesn't know then that doesn't instill much confidence, teeth are his job and he should at least have an idea of what can cause it to happen/what to do to treat it and prevent it etc...

My DS is the same. His little sister has dazzling white teeth. I'm hoping his teeth will whiten naturally as he gets older. His older cousins had yellow teeth at the same age. Now they are teenagers, their teeth are much improved.

highpointpediatricdentistry.com/blog/2018/06/26/my-childs-teeth-are-yellow/

Read that.

Some of my family have the inherited disorder amelogenesis imperfecta. This can cause yellowness and weakness due to poor enamel. My DN teeth are very yellow and she has had extensive treatment at Bristol children's dental hospital. My brother had treatment at the Eastman dental hospital in London some years ago. Both had all their treatment on the NHS.
There are various genes involved and mixed inheritance patterns.

My dentist told me that yellower teeth (naturally rather than stained) tend to be stronger than (naturally) pure white ones

Don't know how true that is, this was about 35 years ago

DamonSalvatoresDinner · 19/02/2019 14:01

My sister always had yellow teeth. No reason for it, that's just the way they were. She had no cavities growing up and her teeth were lovely and strong. My white ones weren't as good. We ate the same stuff, drank the same drinks and brushed our teeth together but her yellow teeth fared far better than my pretty white ones.

Fishwifecalling · 19/02/2019 14:02

I've got strong good teeth that are on the yellow side. No fillings. My mum says that doctors said it was due to drugs I was given when I was hospitalised for scarlet fever as a child. No idea how true that is.

That article is horrible to read. Not the contents but the colours and font.

DD had very yellow teeth after repeated amoxicillin - the dentist said she'd had too much her ENT specialist disagreed and said she'd need them cosmetically whitened once she was 18. She's 14 now and has been fine for a few years now. Electronic toothbrush and whitening toothpaste, and time.

Booboostwo · 19/02/2019 14:31

Yellow teeth are stronger and teeth come naturally in many colours - dentists have colour charts so they can match repairs to natural teeth. The American craze with veneers has distorted our views of what are healthy, normal teeth.

TanselleTooTall · 19/02/2019 14:35

My son had very noticeably yellow teeth. No holes in them, rarely ate sweets and even rarer were fizzy pop.
A couple of.years have passed and they have whitened up a few shades. He is 10 now.

justmyview · 19/02/2019 15:05

My DS' teeth are a bit yellow. Dentist said it could have been caused by a virus, possibly in the womb

chillpizza · 19/02/2019 15:07

My son are the same apparently it’s something to do with all the different asthma medication his been on since young as well as antibiotics.

hellhavenofury · 19/02/2019 15:30

Mine came through stained because I had the flu when they developed and my mum asked the dentist and eh said there isn't anything to change it as they are perfectly healthy :D

Fiveredbricks · 19/02/2019 16:05

Antibiotics when pregnant or just after birth OP?

Reacher1 · 19/02/2019 16:40

It's to do with weak enamel and is present from birth. My daughter is the same, good brushing technique and no cavities, but yellowish teeth. One dentist said but down on the sugar, but lately they just seem to accept it as a thing.

Chloemol · 19/02/2019 20:45

Mine are yellow sand always have been, my sisters are different shades of white. It’s just how they grow. Mine have been lightened a bit by a whitener treatment from the dentist. But unless I have them all out and implants at £25k there is nothing I can do

Nothinglefttochoose · 20/02/2019 08:32

I always had yellow teeth when my adult ones came through. No holes or anything, just tellow. I got them whitened when I was 18 and it worked so well. I am 40 years old and my teeth are still much whiter than they ever were originally.

MRex · 20/02/2019 08:41

Antibiotics or excess fluoride?
Are they really yellow in comparison to adults, or just in comparison to a few other kids around you?
