My toddler is looking too skinny

AIBU to worry that DS is quite unwell? I feel useless that I don't know what's going on, or am I just being dramatic?

He started waking up all through the night just before Christmas. He will wake up crying every half an hour and just be hysterical for about 5 minutes before falling asleep on me (and only me) and won't even lie on his own.

He's always been a fussy eater but he's also a good eater and will always eat something. For the past couple of weeks he's been really, really stubborn with food in the day and has actually been refusing tea altogether and taking himself off to bed and falling asleep without anything (he's not even 2 yet, he's 2 next month!)

I woke up this morning and was watching DP get him dressed and I'm not sure if I was being paranoid but he just looked so skinny. He's happy in himself but he looks skinnier than usual, he's pale and he's got subtle purple patches on his cheeks, sometimes he just starts blinking slowly and it looks like he's fatigued.

AIBU to be sitting panicking? Should I make a GP appointment? Or HV?

He’s probably fine and just a phase, but if he’s off his food and looking thin I don’t see the harm in getting him a check up – they can check he’s a healthy weight etc and advise.

If your worried have a chat with your hv.

It’s normal for them to have picky stages so I wouldn’t worry too much, just get calories in when you can and how you can

timeisnotaline · 19/02/2019 11:36

While he’s probably fine yes you should check. I’d get a gp appt and ask for a height and weight referral to hv as well as a general check up , in my area I’ve heard hv say we only measure height at 12m and if there’s a gp referral.

Get him along to HV clinic to get him weighed. For now you can weigh him at home and check where he plots on his red book.

My brother was like this OP, my mum used to make him 'milkshakes' full fat milk, a banana or banana and strawberries frozen and a spoon of honey, all blended makes a thick 'shake' we'd probably call it a smoothie these days but this was in the eighties, it was a good way to get some calories and nutrients into him and he saw it as a treat, your DS might be more inclined to have that than a meal. If you're worried he's unwell rather than just a fussy phase take him to the HV or GP

Nut butters are good for weight gain and make sure you are giving vitamins too.

MadameJosephine · 19/02/2019 11:58

Trust your instinct , If he’s not himself I would take him to the GP

BertieBotts · 19/02/2019 12:00

Does he have vitamin D drops?

MamaBear2181 · 19/02/2019 12:40

At that age is it a possibility that he’s cutting molars? It can put them off food and make them angsty at bedtime and during the night. Someone above mentioned making smoothies which is a good idea, you can also make them and freeze them into lolly moulds as a ‘treat’ and would help any teething issues.

The bit about him seeming fatigued etc is a bit worrying though, it could be nothing but I’d get him checked out by HV or GP just to be safe.

Increase water intake aswell in case it’s a touch of dehydration as he will be missing fluids from not eating aswell X Keep us updated if you can, good luck x

My first thought was teething. My little girl is always up more for a few nights before I spot new teeth. And a sore mouth could put him off his food.

Tavannach · 19/02/2019 13:05

Take him to your GP.
