Swizzlefizzlefoo · 19/02/2019 10:53

Sorry if I sound really silly here. I just have no idea how to help ds year 4 spark any interest whatsoever in this topic. He is really down about school in general. Does anyone have any bright ideas??

OP posts:
BrizzleMint · 19/02/2019 10:56

Has he watched the Horrible Histories episodes about the Anglo Saxons?

UtterlyDesperate · 19/02/2019 10:56

Alfred and the cakes? Nice story and you could visit the statue/bake
Ethelred the Unready? Comedy value of the name - reuse it in daily life if someone is disorganised

UtterlyDesperate · 19/02/2019 10:57

If you are near Oxford, go and see the Alfred jewel in the Ashmolean too

Finfintytint · 19/02/2019 10:57

Where about are you? Lots of sites to visit. Some have reconstructed villages.

Hoppinggreen · 19/02/2019 10:58

DS just did this at school.
Definitely didn’t find his sisters one from 3 years ago and recycle most of that - oh no!
The bits that DS likes Best was building a ship and making oat biscuits

TheFirstOHN · 19/02/2019 11:01

When I saw the title, I thought you were suggesting this as a new topic for Mumsnet.

AdaColeman · 19/02/2019 11:04

Where abouts in the country are you?

Is DS about 8 years old? Get a copy of the poem The Battle of Maldon in translation and read it together.

corythatwas · 19/02/2019 11:08

If he is the type to be excited by heroes and adventures, the Sutton Hoo ship burial, perhaps with a bit of Beowulf and dragon fighting.

If he is more the quiet type, then Alfred encouraging people to learn to read and write- the story of him learning to read because his mother promised a beautiful manuscript to whichever sibling learnt first, the Alfred Jewel (one of many) intended to encourage literacy.

Reconstructed villages always good.

So did I. I thought I had found some people I could really enjoy talking to.

Oh well.

Whereabouts in the country are you OP? I might have some ideas for you.

AdaColeman · 19/02/2019 11:20

Yes, I brightened up when I thought it was a suggestion for a new topic board! Smile

There is a Michael Morpurgo version of Beowulf which would be worth getting.

QueenofLouisiana · 19/02/2019 11:35

A weekend in Suffolk would get you to West Stow Anglo Saxon village and Sutton Hoo.

My yr5/6 class loved Beowulf and all its gore!

CaptainButtock · 19/02/2019 11:43

Not sure it counts a Anglo Saxon, but I do recall my boys discovering a sudden love for history after discovering King Edmund was stabbed up the bum while doing a poo SadGrin

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 19/02/2019 12:10

There’s the film version of Beowulf, all monsters and heroes, written by Neil Gaiman with terrific animation.

There are Anglo-Saxon riddles, which are kind of amusing, if he likes puzzles.

1066 and All That is a fun read.

@CaptainButtock, Like others, I had misunderstood the title and had popped in to say 'er... not sure we need a topic on the Anglo Saxons on Mumsnet do we?' But you've just convinced me! ;-) What a way to go.

GrouchyKiwi · 19/02/2019 12:46

1066 And All That is dangerous, though. Grin I still have to think hard to make sure I don't say "Magna Charter" (though I have never confused sausages and hostages) and I always have to examine what I think I know about the kings and queens of England.

Sorry to be pedantic but that was King Edward II - a Plantagenet.

longwayoff · 19/02/2019 12:57

Ha! Thought this would be a Brexit/Ukip rant so came armed with my trusty sword ... not required I'm happy to say Grin

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/02/2019 13:02

I was expecting a thread of AIBU from Anglo-Saxons, a bit like when people post pretending to be their baby or cat!

AIBU everyone keeps blaming me for burning the cakes, surely I have enough to think about...
