To ask about PMDD

I’ve suffered with incredibly bad PMT since starting my periods, (I’m now 40) to the extent that it has caused relationships to end and problems at work. I was wondering if anyone else who has suffered with this has received treatment for it, if so what, and had it helped/had any negative side effects. I’m (finally) seeing my GP next week and am hoping a) they take it seriously and b) that treatment, if any, will help? Thank you

Thank you for posting this & for all the posters who shared their experiences. I’ve thought I was going mad - I’ve now had this for the last 4 months in the week before my period came but since they’ve been a bit irregular I hadn’t connected the dots.

I’m so unbearably anxious mostly but also feeling what I imagine must be depression. I tried exercise, breathing exercises & even gin in the evenings but it’s lifted today since my period has started.

I need to make a GP appt soon or to my gynae (not in the UK) because this can’t carry on. My kids had to comfort me at the weekend as I was sobbing.

Hope the antidepressants help you

Summerfalls · 20/02/2019 22:45

So many women suffering with this and yet it seems so little knowledge about it still here in the uk or it’s just dismissed. It’s runied my teens and 20’s and I’m hoping I can at least minimise it to function at a more even level each month by the time I’m 30. I would happily have my womb and ovaries removed if it would cure it.

Emeraldshamrock · 20/02/2019 22:51

The Gp who put the puzzle together for me was in the UK. When I moved back to Ireland my new GP had to read up on it.
It is rare but extreme for sufferers.
It is so debilitating, it is the main reason I work PT it is easier to hide it and cope.

Littlechocola · 20/02/2019 22:58

Another with pmdd.
I used to have one week each month where I was ok. The other three weeks I was suicidal, Angry. I was awful.
I was taking a low dose antidepressant but struggled to find one to suit me. Then I tried the pill but it didn’t help. I’ve not had any symptoms for a year but wonder if this is due to my age.

Sorry to bump an old thread. Has anyone else experienced weight gain from steraline. I am on it 4 months now, although it has helped immensely with my PMDD, I have more energy, doing more actively.
I am piling on the lbs. I have never been heavier than 7stone 9lb, 8 at a push.
I am 9 stone 2lb. 17lb weight gain in 3 months, I am eating normal amounts, not much changed diet wise, once I got over the first month of eating everything, it is like it has completely slowed my metabolism down.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 18/05/2019 14:33

YES. I put on over a stone and was constantly hungry. I had horrific heartburn with it.

I much prefer citalopram. Don't get either of those issues

EmeraldShamrock · 18/05/2019 14:36

Citalopram did not help me. I spent years on flouxentine, if anything caused me more stress.
I am wondering will it settle out eventually. I am planning a jog tomorrow. Smile

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 18/05/2019 14:43

I was on sertraline for about 18 months and the battle with the weight was constant.
I didn't realise the sertraline was the cause until I came off it because I was pregnant.

I would never go on it again because of that and the heartburn.

Citalopram was great but just stopped working after only 2 years.

When I get my periods back I'm not actually sure what I'm going to do. If I don't do something though it will cost me my marriage.
Stupid bloody hormones.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/05/2019 15:05

AndOutComeTheBoobs It is awful isn't it. It will also be a massive cost to my relationship if I stop them. I feel selfish vain thinking as my mood has stabilised, at the same time I suffered from an eating disorder in the past, I don't want to recreate it.
It sucks. If I find the answers I will update. Smile
Back to the GP again, We need to see an endocrinologist. My DM had it, she is still depressed, had horrendous menopause after it, Ive never known her not being effected. DD may inherite it, let's hope there's more help in the future. Sad

I get this and find St Johns wort helpful.

user87382294757 · 18/05/2019 15:25

Do other get headaches as well? I have some co-codomol but don't like taking it. Sometimes it feels like a kind of pressure headache or something. I try and take things easy and be kind to myself the week before. exercise can help a bit but get tired and don't want to do it so much or go out. But when I do it can help a bit.

user87382294757 · 18/05/2019 15:27

I googled and saw something about Mirena may be helpful for some people. I think more progesteron makes mine worse perhaps though.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/05/2019 16:07

Yes I do get headaches lately, I didn't relate it. I never headaches I bought my first box of nurofen 2 weeks ago in years.
I would try the mirena but worried more hormones will make it worse, the pill sent me crazy.
I asked my GP about hysterectomy, he put it on the long finger.
I am going to insist.

user87382294757 · 18/05/2019 16:10

I didn't relate the headaches either till I just read it in the symptoms online, and realised yes it is associated. have it now and due in a couple of days. and tearful / cross, the usual!

EmeraldShamrock · 18/05/2019 16:21

I going to download the head space app, I use to meditate it helped until my pms kicked in, not a healer unfortunately.
I can't believe I didn't relate the headaches. I've had dry mouth, weight gain, headaches yet more stable moods.
It'll be a hard choice.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 18/05/2019 18:13

I can't have any hormone based contraception. That's like having severe PMT every day of the month.

My mum also suffered but citalopram got her through the menopause.

I have three boys so have stopped the cycle.
