To think my landlord is an idiot?

Long story short, I rented this two-bed we are in five years ago after I left an abusive ex. I live in it with my fiance now and two boys (9 and 11) who I share 50:50 custody of with their dad. When I moved in it was liveable in but my mum and I spent a lot of time into decorating it (with landlord permission) to make it look lovely. The loud red walls were changed to a pretty mushroom and both bedrooms and hallway fully decorated more neutrally. I keep it very clean and tidy.
But I have been telling him for years that we are starting to get a mould problem. It's now got really bad. We haven't been able to open our bathroom room window for three years as it was broken-only fixed literally today. I kept asking him to get it looked at.
He says it's our fault because we have too much stuff and we must keep the heating on 24/7.
I'm really being affected by this mentally.
We cannot afford to move.
Any advice much appreciated.

In the interim Hg mould spray is brilliant and I would buy some oil radiators to dot about. Summer is coming so you can have the windows open more.

Some people are saying it's too cold and some are saying it's too warm!!!! Dehumidifier is the landlord's but I would say it's a bit rubbish.

Some people are saying it's too cold and some are saying it's too warm!!!! It is both! The walls are cold and the air is warm. When they come into contact a thin layer of condensation forms and, if it is left, that is where the mould spores grow.

It is shite. And the change in the law and the new one stop cmplaints department won't be of any help to you - yet!

All you can do is take simple steps:

  1. Air the whole place regularly
  2. Move furniture out from wall a little, to increase air circulation
  3. Use HG Mould spray on affected areas - do it on a warmer day and leave all windows and doors open!
  4. Consider some additional heating in the cold spots
  5. Continue talking to the LL about future maintenance.

Good luck getting it under control.

We had really bad damp in our old property. The scumbag of a landlord refused to fix anything or even look into the mould
Dettol mouldy remover worked fairly well, repainting often with the mould inhibitor stuff in, and extra heating- we used lots of oil radiators. Our electric bill was astronomical at £60+ a week in the winter to heat a tiny shit hole.

Please move as quickly as you can.

We moved, ended up having to throw out a lot of furniture as the metal of our beds was rusty, the backs of our wardrobes and draws had mould growing on them, curtains were mould stained. But best thing I did was move to a more expensive house which ended up costing less when our electric and gas started costing us £77 a month with radiators instead of shitty convector heaters and oil rads with dehumidifiers.

We can't afford to move and are not able to relocate to another area. I move county tomorrow but not possible 😢 This place does have central heating but a rubbish landlord who hates spending any money!

I read that there was a campaign in Scotland called 'Ten for Ten'.
It said to open your windows for ten minutes at ten in the morning, however cold the day is - just to let out all the night's water vapour.

I guess it would work before work too if you're not in at ten.
