Would you take a child to hospital just for having a temp over 40?

One of my twins (2.5) has been having random high temperatures with no other symptoms for 10 days now. It was at its worst Friday - Monday. They’ve become much less frequent - had one Friday morning, Saturday morning, then one in the middle of the night last night but it was only 38.2 and it came down quickly.

He hasn’t had any other symptoms at all and apparently lots of the kids at his nursery have the same thing going on.

Took him to nursery this morning as normal as he was absolutely fine. Got a call from them at 11am sounding very worried saying he had a temp of 40.4 - I rushed over there (only took 10 mins to get there) and it had already come down but he was very sleepy so I brought him home. He’s been fine since, no more temps, ate lunch and had a nap.

The staff at nursery said that children should go to hospital if they have a temp over 40 - I looked on the NHS site earlier this week as I was worried and it doesn’t give any cut offs like this. He didn’t have any of the other symptoms they list to be concerned about. I was considering taking him to the GP on Friday but it seemed to be improving by then. They called me this afternoon and asked if I’d taken him to hospital - I said I didn’t think it was necessary as he was absolutely fine by the time we left nursery.

Obviously I will take him to the GP in the morning (couldn’t get an appointment today by the time I picked him up) or seek help sooner if he deteriorates, but AIBU to think a child doesn’t need to go to hospital for a high temp alone, especially when it comes down on its own quite quickly? I don’t want to take any risks but I don’t want to overreact either.

I would.

Both my children had febrile seizures after having random high temperatures for about the same time period. No other symptoms. Calpol and nurofen both helped and temp always seemed to go down but it took an age! I went with them to the GP after 7 days and they said virus... a few days later a day between them both they were taken to a&e via ambulance.

I don't wait anymore.

Oh my goodness, that’s so frightening - you must have been so worried.

He seems absolutely fine right now - had a raised temp again about 6pm but went down within 10 mins. He’s fast asleep now and I’m watching him on the video monitor - hopefully he will sleep well with no more temps and then we can see the doctor tomorrow.

I went through this several times with DD2 (now 6). Her temperature used to spike suddenly and she would wake up in the night in distress. It was scary at times, but it always came down with Calpol and children's Nurofen.

It is so scary isn’t it - I suppose it should be more worrying if they do have other symptoms, but the lack of other symptoms has made me nervous this week as I just don’t know where it’s coming from.

No one warned me that motherhood was basically nonstop worrying!

Is he teething? I know it sounds random but my dd who is 2 and a bit just spent two weeks cutting three teeth and we had exactly the same. Raging temp then back down and happy as anything. I looked like a right wally when her dad walked in and she is bouncing about like a loon until later when it happened again.

Spoke to my local out of hours in the end as I am a worrier due to my older girls both having febrile convulsions. They advised that back molars can upset all sorts of things making them susceptible to bugs galore.

SinkGirl · 18/02/2019 21:41

Interesting - he’s never really reacted badly to his teeth coming through, but his twin brother has definitely had a lot of discomfort from his molars over the last couple of months.

He woke up a little while ago very upset, no temp but a very runny nose and coughing. Very weird that it’s taken so long to turn into a cold, unless he has caught one bug after another.

Thanks everyone for your advice yesterday. Got an urgent appointment for this morning and saw a lovely trainee GP who ruled out any obvious infections or issues and believes it’s viral but was concerned because of his medical history. Consulted with a senior GP who agreed, but we’ve been advised to monitor closely and if he deteriorates at all to go straight to hospital as they would just refer us to them anyway. Hopefully it just resolves itself.
