Started going to a quiz night once a month with OH & his friend (first time Fri night). As part of it, the pub kindly brings out a bowl of nachos & dips for each table. There was a huge bowl of nachos & 2 very small dips, therefore each time I had a nacho I took just a tiny bit of dip as I didn't think there would be enough otherwise.

However I watched in horror as OH's friend not only got loads of dip on each of his nachos (and he made quite an effort to ensure each of his was well loaded), but bit it, then returned each one back to the bowl for extra dipping!!!!! So not only is that very greedy but double dipping too!!!

Don't quite know how I'm going to get through the next quiz night without saying something. Even my kids know you don't double dip!!!!!

Ha ha yes you are probably right. Maybe just decant onto a bit of napkin!

TortoiseLettuce · 18/02/2019 16:26

Things like flu, SARS, Legionnaires and even pneumonic plague are spread by human saliva. Not to mention the incurable horror that is herpes.

HotSauceCommittee · 18/02/2019 16:28

I still haven’t properly (in my head) forgiven my friend of 30 years for taking the piss with my curry sauce. We got a basket of chips each. She got cheesy chips. I don’t like cheesy chips, so I got chips with curry sauce. I offered her a dip (a dip! One dip!!!!) of my curry and she went to town on it! Never again will I offer her my curry sauce.

AcrossthePond55 · 18/02/2019 16:30

Take your small bit of dip, nibble the dip off, start to return nacho to the dip bowl, stop suddenly and gasp loudly "OMG, I almost double dipped!! Thank God I caught myself in time!!!". You can accompany this with a 'meaningful' look at the offender. It can be doubly effective if you do it right after they've double dipped.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 18/02/2019 16:35

But aren’t all the toppings falling into the dip every time? I think that would gross me out more than double dipping, I hate errant bits of food falling into the dip.

drspouse · 18/02/2019 16:35

Do you mean tortilla chips i.e. what you'd get out of a bag of Doritos?

Or do you mean actual nachos?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nachos

If the former, YABVVVVVU in calling them nachos as they are NOT, but YANBU in expecting people not to double dip.
As regards using up all the dips well, if everyone has a fair go at them, then you should complain to the pub next time that there wasn't enough dip, or order extra.

It's perfectly possible to eat tortilla chips on their own without dip, though it may not be what you prefer.

drspouse · 18/02/2019 16:36

myfoolish I don't think she's actually talking about nachos. I'm not sure she knows that she isn't, though.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 18/02/2019 16:44

Ohh, DrSpouse, I just came on to say exactly that. I was thinking dark and murderous thoughts about people calling tortilla chips 'nachos'.

Glad I'm not the only Tex-Mex pedant in town.

drspouse · 18/02/2019 16:45

I don't see why people don't understand this as the packets of Doritos clearly do NOT say they are nachos.

Maybe all the pubs have been infiltrated with nacho-oblivious menu writers?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 18/02/2019 16:54

Mind you sharing nachos is even more fraught. That’s right mate, go ahead and take all the top layer.

WarpedGalaxy · 18/02/2019 17:41

Nachos is the name of the dish not the name of the chips which compose the base ingredient. These are basically triangles cut from corn or flour tortillas and baked and known as tortilla chips. These chips are then covered with various toppings to serve as nachos.

Yes, fresh-made in a restaurant tortilla chips are far far superior to Doritos or other generic processed prepackaged chips but to say these are not tortilla chips is like saying a Walkers crisp isn't actually a crisp because it wasn't hand-cut on a mandolin at home and deep-fried in finest cold-pressed by hand sunflower oil. Doritos are tortilla chips, not great tortilla chips but still tortilla chips.

MNers seem to worry a lot about germs.

beanaseireann · 18/02/2019 17:57

My very generous DM has no problem offering us a taste of what she has put her already used spoon or fork into or putting her already used spoon or fork into our food to taste it. She just doesn't get the yuck factor. I think it stems from the fact that when she was young, they didn't have a whole lot, there were a lot of them in the family so they shared. They couldn't afford to be precious hygienic.

hula008 · 18/02/2019 17:57

I have no idea what you're on about and still can't figure it out. Do you think that tortilla chips and Doritos are different? Or nachos and tortilla chips?

Both Doritos and nachos are made of tortilla chips. Nachos is the name of a dish, which comprises of mainly tortilla chips and normally has a number of toppings (queso, sour cream, salsa etc). Doritos are mass produced tortilla chips but you could use Doritos when making nachos (put toppings on) and it would still be nachos.

hula008 · 18/02/2019 17:58

WarpedGalaxy sorry, I missed your post!

drspouse · 18/02/2019 18:00

Did you read my first post?

Lovingbenidorm · 18/02/2019 18:05

I would take my own dip and on taking it out of handbag say
“And YOU, keep your greedy, thieving, double dipping , fat fuck face
OFF”

WarpedGalaxy · 18/02/2019 18:09

I'm assuming hula008 did read your post and found it a bit confusing like I did drspouse. But I think I've got it now.

Nachos is a dish made from tortilla chips and toppings

Doritos are tortilla chips but are not nachos unless made into a dish with toppings

Chips and dip (which is what I now think the OP is talking about) are not nachos just 'naked' chips with dip served separately for dipping.
into.

Whew! Grin

Funkyslippers · 18/02/2019 19:07

Jakethekid no plates I'm afraid, nachos came in a basket with the 2 dips

drspouse well it was advertised as nachos but actually just tortilla chips with dips, so no toppings. I was disappointed at first but maybe it was for the best!

He's actually a really nice guy, thought I don't know him very well. He's probably used to living on his own for too long. I'm gonna have to say something next time. No way am I sacrificing my nachos tortilla chips and dips for anyone!

OP posts:
Funkyslippers · 18/02/2019 19:10

drspouse I even had some of the chips naked (not me, the chips!) just so we wouldn't run out of dips

I never share nachos for all the reasons listed above. Also because i'm really greedy and I love them. Men (usually although there are probably some guilty women too) don't know how to portion the toppings out. So they take way too much. I think the man in the OP is just being male about his dip amounts. As for the double dip thing . ..he's probably never been told. It's one of those things that has come about recently. When dipping first became popular then people didn't care so much... it's really only in last 10 years I've even heard mention of double dipping.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/02/2019 19:46

We learned from Seinfeld that double dipping was wrong in 1993 (or slightly afterwards, whenever it was on UK TV).

Oysterbabe · 18/02/2019 19:53

MNers seem to worry a lot about germs.

They really do. Some of the stuff that comes up in here it wouldn't cross my mind to worry about for a second.

drspouse · 18/02/2019 20:06

Maybe it's a case for Zoflora?

Pinkprincess1978 · 18/02/2019 20:13

I had never heard of double dipping until pointed out (after I had double dipped) by a cousin. Funnily enough User it would have been about 10 years ago so I think you are right about that.

I'm not too bothered about double dipping but I generally only share with people I know very well. In a buffet situation most people take a portion of the dip on their plate so double dipping not an easy option.
