Strange question I know but my ex moved out and left me with nothing but a ruined house. Hes left everything half decorated (but took every single tool, paintbrush, basically anything at all I need to finish it and left me with no money!) and I’m having to teach myself how to wallpaper/etc but also his dog has ripped up my kitchen and landing flooring.

I want to pop down the local carpet fitters and get them to install new ones but the problem is my furniture. I’m really small and disabled and I simply can’t move it Blush

I don’t have any support/neighbours etc that could help. As far as I know for safety reasons the fitters can’t move things like fridges/washing machines etc is that right?

AIBU to wonder what the hell people do Confused I’m so embarrassed by it all and my poor kids are living in a tip

Well It might be worth asking if the carpet fitters can offer this help and cost it into the price before seeking other ways of sorting it .You are right about the safety aspect but if they know the reason behind your query they might be able to help. Cant do any harm to ask anyway.
If they cant I would probably ask for small-job type of handymen recommendations on facebook local pages.

In my experience a small local carpet business will be more willing to move furniture than a larger carpet company with lots of stores.

Handsfull13 · 17/02/2019 22:53

Go and ask the carpet fitters what they can do. My carpet guy is amazing and prides himself on minimal moving to fit. All he asks is you remove valuables but leave furniture.

Take a few pictures of the move and pop into the carpet shop and see what they can do.

MidniteScribbler · 17/02/2019 22:56

Just ask on Facebook for a handyman or two for a couple of hours.

My parents have just had new carpets fittted and the carpet fitters were great. As my parents are in the late 70s/early 80s they weren’t able to move anything and the carpet gutters managed.

Good luck :)

Carpet fitters will happily move items before fitting, but may charge.

John Lewis fitters charge £50 an item Shock weather it's a massive sofa or a small lamp

MorningCuppa · 17/02/2019 23:01

Find a local fitter on Facebook they will most probably help with things like furniture.

Is there a Care and Repair service or Home Improvement Agency in your area? www.foundations.uk.com - plus contact the council to ask. These are charitable services who will do handyperson and small repair jobs for people on low incomes who are disabled or elderly, either free or for a small charge.

There are no safety implications of moving furniture as part of your job. If you are in a position that involves moving or lifting you would legally have had to have manual handling training amongst other things anyway. It really annoys me when people say "we can't because of health and safety" because 99% of time time its complete bullshit. Even worse are the ones who say "we can't because of H&S but we will if you pay us £££." Angry it's like Curry's who say £50 for installation of electrical products then refuse to put it on a spur and insist that "installation" is simply plugging it into a socket AngryAngry

Sorry, off on a tangent there..

I'm having the whole of my ground floor redone this week. The charge includes the time taken to move large items of furniture, I will move the smaller items (like the coffee table etc). I've never had to move furniture myself to get floors laid, if they won't do it then just find someone who will.

AJPTaylor · 18/02/2019 06:36

Ask on Facebook for local recommended carpet shop/carpet fitters who will move furniture.
It was only with the advent of the giant companies that this became a problem!
