To think the laundry room can be away from the kitchen!??

As it says really we are building a house, currently in the design stage. And I am adamant that I want the laundry room next to the main bathroom ( on the bedroom side of the house) BUT everyone keeps making faces like I’m insane and saying it needs to be up near the kitchen!! WHY would I carry my laundry to the kitchen side of the house to just bring it back again!! Tell me I’m not crazy!! It makes complete sense to me to keep it separate! There would be a door on the laundry with access to the garden too!

Mine is beside the kitchen but with separate access to the garden too.
There is space for airers and ironing board. In there too.

Maelstrop · 17/02/2019 20:48

My laundry room has nothing to do with the kitchen. It's on the same floor, but the two aren't connected. YANBU!

Clutterbugsmum · 17/02/2019 20:49

Tell DH if he insists on the laundry room is next to the kitchen then HE will be responsible for ALL the laundry.

Having the laundry room next to where most of the washing is created makes more sense.

Giraffetower · 17/02/2019 20:50

Washing machines can be noisy and heavy -you might find you need special flooring if you want them on a 2nd floor?

Maybe think about using your cabling /wiring/drainage hub and extending it for a laundry chute?

MrsExpo · 17/02/2019 20:50

Our neighbours recently built one over their garage, accessed via a door in the adjacent bedroom. Not near the kitchen at all and (apparently) it works a treat. Put it where it works, not where people say it ought to be.

YahBasic · 17/02/2019 20:53

DH’s family house is set up the exact same way - utility off the main bathroom with a door to the outside.

All one level too, so not too far from the kitchen. It’s worked really well for them for 30 odd years!

Wishwashing · 17/02/2019 20:54

@Clutterbugsmum DH Is actually on my side with this one thank god!!

@Giraffetower the house will be a bungalow so all one floor, no upstairs.

I've recently had my washer and dryer moved into the downstairs cloakroom in order to extend my kitchen and get rid of the totally useless utility room. It's much better but if I could have moved it up to or next to the bathroom I would have done.

dudsville · 17/02/2019 20:56

I once viewed a house with a Landry room off the garage and with access to the garden. It also had a small wc. Made perfect sense. I'd love to be able to wash dogs down without them coming through the house first.

TheDHand · 17/02/2019 20:56

Ours is upstairs after a redesign some years ago. It’s the obvious place. The only laundry I carry upstairs is tea towels and napkins. It is in the extension over the garage in case of a washing machine leak into the downstairs.

The only thing I regret is not making it bigger. It would have been really helpful to have space to leave the ironing board up all the time. As it is my ironing board still seems to end up in the spare room with a basket of ironing which slightly defeats the purpose of having a utility room!

SpoonBlender · 17/02/2019 20:57

Ours is in the utility room by the bathroom, as is the boiler. We moved both those things out of the kitchen to upstairs when we remodelled the kitchen. It's excellent.

Raspberry10 · 17/02/2019 20:59

If I had the choice I would always put it near the bedrooms, main bathroom. Makes total sense!

Wishwashing · 17/02/2019 21:00

I am so glad I asked I am now saving this thread for the next person who says anything!!

@Wishwashing Ooh sorry, completely missed the last sentence in your op Blush Definitely a good idea to have the laundry room nearer to where the majority of the laundry originates. No brainer.

Gershwin · 17/02/2019 21:15

A house we lived in had a laundry/utility room with a large airing cupboard and the water tank in it. I could get the washing out of the machine and put it straight in he airing cupboard on big airing racks to dry. It was brilliant.

Sweepingcalamity · 17/02/2019 21:35

You are not crazy! The only down side to this is noise. If you are only able to put washing on in the early morning and late at night and the machine is near bedrooms for example. If not then it's a win win! (Aside from any potential floods that might do more damage upstairs,. or fires but make sure you have suitable floors and smoke detectors in your laundry.). I spend my life carrying washing up and downstairs. It's a nightmare in a tall house tbh.

donajimena · 17/02/2019 21:39

In an ideal world I'd have a laundry chute.

3in4years · 17/02/2019 21:40

We have just moved our washing machine and tumble dryer upstairs out of necessity. The previous owners had a utility which we are turning into a dining room, so no room left for them downstairs. This thread is reassuring. However, I would choose downstairs if I could I think, so I could access the washing line in the garden more easily. I know this is not relevant to you though OP.

whenthewhistleblows · 17/02/2019 21:44

In Sweden (if you don’t have a laundry room) the washing machine is in the bathroom. They think it’s nuts that we have it in the kitchen (‘that’s where you cook food! Not wash stuff!’). Laundry room next to the bathroom is a logical choice.

Morgan12 · 17/02/2019 21:49

Your house sounds amazing!

pinkboa · 17/02/2019 21:50

Back in Australia we had ours next to the main bathroom and linen closet was right next to it as well. It was great!

Made putting clothing away a breeze and also putting sheets etc away very easy as well. There was space to iron and fold and it had a door leading to the outside... very convenient for hanging clothes. I miss that house!

Namechanger001 · 17/02/2019 21:51

My neighbour also in a bungalow has her washer and dryer in her bathroom hidden in beautiful sleek cabinets well away from any water issues. I actually love the idea and would alter ours if I could afford it.

SweepTheHalls · 17/02/2019 21:53

I have mine off the main bathroom. It's brilliant.

dreichuplands · 17/02/2019 21:54

We have ours in the basement, we have also had one in the back of the garage. Adding kitchen smells and grease would add very little in my view.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 17/02/2019 21:57

Where I am this is the convention. You havebyou was her/fryer in the bathroom if your house is small. If you have a normal house you have a laundry room right next to the bathroom. I think the reason why Brits have them next to the kitchen is because they keep washing machines in their kitchens when they don’t have laundry rooms which is weird AF. Apparently something to do with safety regulations.
