Dp handyman was asked to take a look at a ladies small job she wanted doing nothing major. So along he went spoke to her about it then he had to search around the shops looking for suitable style colour etc and also on the Internet he sent pics of what he had found and asked her if she would consider this or that etc. She sent reply saying no and I've got someone else to do it.

Try vista print for cards and flyers. Really cheap and fast too.

Maybe he went wrong there not giving a rough quote

Plus FB, Twitter and Insta can all be used for free advertising.

Always have a pricing structure. It's the first rule of any business.

Think about when you go to a supermarket. You see something on the shelf but it has no price. Some will pick it up and query the price. The majority will leave it on the shelf because it's not worth their time waiting around for a price.

I second the PP. I had a fantastic handyman who was very reasonably priced and I foolishly recommended him to lots of my friends. He was always booked solid after he got established in our village, but I had first dibs every Thursday! Grin

Make sure his day rate is very competitive to start off, when he gets booked up, then maybe put certain prices up. My chap was x per day for gardening/painting/basic jobs but x+£10 for more specialist stuff (plumbing mainly).

It's about getting started. The way I chose my man from other adverts in the shoe shop window, was his partner had done a lovely computer generated garden gate picture, with arch over, flowers & path. Looked so lovely I knew he was would be a goodie and I wasn't wrong!

Maybe your DH could volunteer some free time doing repairs for a dog rescue or similar, then his name would be mentioned on FB and leads could come from there? Grateful thanks to Busy Bobs Odd Jobs & Gardening services that type of thing?

Good luck.

It sounds like it would better for him to find an actual job.

Springwalk · 17/02/2019 14:36

It sounds like you are desperate for his business to take off, and this is a set back. It takes time to build up a good reputation. Keep going with the gkyers, adverts, posters and a good website. Advertise on google and ring round to see if can work in old people home, landlord tenancies etc. Good luck

PeterPiperPickedWrong · 17/02/2019 14:38

he sent pics of what he had found and asked her if she would consider this or that etc

I would assume that she didnt want to make do with this or that and as he couldn’t get what she actually wanted (not his fault I know) she told him she had someone else. She will probably waste several other people’s time as well if what she wants is no longer still available.

Stcatherine · 17/02/2019 14:47

The material she wanted dates back to 1970s/60s

£100 for business cards!! I'm in this sector, that's bloody insane. PM me if you want some help, op (don't use vista print, they're very hit and miss)

bert3400 · 17/02/2019 17:35

That's what being self employed is like ...you win some , you loose some. You sound very naïve about the whole quoting procedure

MrsGarethSouthgate · 17/02/2019 21:53

@Mumthedogsbeensick I've PM'd you the details of the guy who did my bathroom. I don't think he has a website or advertises, he gets plenty of work by recommendation.
