Aibu to have been thinking it was a joke? I get a few flat earth memes on fb through an acquaintance, I thought they were spoofs. It’s slowed dawned they are serious, a mutual friend has confirmed this. There are clearly a fair few others too.

I’ve had a browse, but fb pages like the flat earth society... they seem written as a spoof? Is it an elaborate joke? A mix? How the hell did it come into fashion and why.

The acquaintance is into everything from anti-vax to chem trails, and although those are odd I can see how flawed logic follows through. Why would a conspiracy state the world is round... ?

I’m just bemused and struggling to make sense of this one...

Fish eyed lenses! Make everything seem round at the edges!

Keep up!

Mobile phones? You've seen the repeaters along your road haven't you. Internet controls everything you know. We're all wired for soud and vision!

fascinating carrot... I could have written your post it is exhausting. I'm so worried about my friend. I go silent when she brings any of it up. As I honestly don't know what I can say that's not kind. It's horrible watching her. It makes most avoid her.

Origamiunicorn
What I want to know is, do these flat Earthers think the sun, moon and other planets are flat too or just Earth?

Ah, well, they do have an answer for this. Well, an answering with a question type of answer. It goes like this, if they told you that they had 5 pcs of furniture in a room and 4 of them were chairs would you insist the 5th must be a chair too? So, in this way, it’s quite possible for all the other planets to be chairs while the Earth is a coffee table.

Can you tell I’ve explored this fascinating subject a bit before? Grin

She has a lot of problems in her life that are out of her control and I think this can lead to being very over invested in such nonsense. She gets upset and worried about how we all are asleep and she's worried for us as we need to listen because it's all FACT...

Catinthetwat · 17/02/2019 13:02

Why is it being kept secret though? What's the point of keeping it secret?

feellikeanalien · 17/02/2019 13:05

FascinatingCarrot my DP is the same. I just nod and smile now as when I try to challenge him on anything he tells me that I'm not thinking outside the box and I've been indoctrinated by the mainstream media!! I'm pretty open minded

and don't accept everything at face value but it does get very tiring and quite depressing sometimes.

KissingInTheRain · 17/02/2019 13:11

I think longearedbat is right.

Conspiracy theories - which is what the flat earth nonsense is now, rather than being just a competing understanding of the physical world - are ways of people trying to assert control over a world that’s scarily complicated and technological, and to become more significant (in their own minds).

Claims of secret knowledge and the exposure of powerful shadowy figures allow the misguided to think they’re important and ought to be listened to.

WarpedGalaxy · 17/02/2019 13:15

Catinthetwat Do try and keep up.
Did you not read my post where I explained this?

They tPtB believe we can’t handle the truth. They think we’d all go crazy with fear and rush the Wall and start climbing it and someone would fall and break a leg. It’s for our own good.

Or, another theory is that it’s about money and land. See, on a Flat Earth there is more available land than there is on a round Earth (because of course there is) and if we plebs knew about all this extra land, we’d want some of it to build more houses and stuff and tPtB want to keep it for themselves to build golf courses and stuff.

Catinthetwat · 17/02/2019 13:22

Oh I see. At first I was thinking, 'they' would surely let people fall off the edge - over-population and all that.

But the golf courses - yep that makes sense now!

sunnyCoco thanks for the heads up on behind the curve. I’ve just watched it. Best bit (after his first experiment failed) is when the flat earther says 'I’ve got a back up experiment.

The test is, if the earth is flat (as he believes) he'll be able to see his mates torch at 17 feet high in the distance. If it’s curved (which he believes is nonsense ) his mate would need to hold it higher.

Night of test he says 'I can’t see your torch' therefore the experiment is a complete failure. His mate holds the torch higher (therefore proving the earth is curved) The flat world tester response at his beliefs have been shattered is 'interesting' - brilliant

ScorpiaForCatra · 17/02/2019 22:03

Head to YouTube and search for a channel called: SciManDan.
He makes videos that debunks the flattards and proves their knowledge is faulty. But they then tell him he's wrong and use a complete lack of basic understanding to prove him wrong.
It's great.

Obviously bullshit. Flat earth indeed haha.

Anyone with a scrap of intelligence knows it's shaped like a doughnut! 🍩
