Mine were the space shuttle explosion, Princess Diana dying and 9/11 plus the explosion at Mill Hill barracks and the Harrods bombing.

I was curious what they were for older/younger people so what events do you really remember.

Ben Hardwick story - I used to follow this on That's Life each week. I got a donor card and I vowed to name any son I had Ben. My Ben will be 16 this summer.

My FIL remembers King George dying.

AllMumsyWereTheBorrowedClothes · 17/02/2019 18:55

So many of those already mentioned, but my stand out events are:-
Bobby Kennedy being killed : I was on a Brownie trip to Windsor Castle, and I remember that the small carton of milk I had been given to drink was sour.
Diana: I was in bed nightfeeding new born DD.

Regent's Park bombing: safe at work in central London but had a bad feeling about it, turns out close friend was there, no physical injuries, but badly shocked. Then found out my dbrother had been in the front row the day before.
Harrows bomb: off work with a hangover, my poor DM was frantic trying to get hold of me, while I was oblivious.

Nelson Mandela leaving Robben Island: in a hotel bar in Leningrad (St Petersburg) with dh, being propositioned by a very drunk Swede called Claus.....
Nothing much from childhood as my DM kept us away from tv news and newspapers. I was inclined to do the same with my dc, but got badly caught out by the news on Radio 3 years ago, when dh was working in a difficult country, only to hear news of a bomb attack in the city he was in. That took some time, and a very expensive phone call, to recover from. I'd thought I was safe with Radio 3.

PierreBezukov · 17/02/2019 18:56

Both Brexit and Trump were when DH and I checked our phones the moment we woke up.

SingaSong12 · 17/02/2019 18:56

9/11
7/7 bombings

crow2018 · 17/02/2019 19:17

I was in primary school when 9/11 happened, I remember seeing it on the news at my mums friends house.

I woke up read that David Bowie had died on Facebook and then went into labour with DS 😂

The most momentus one foe me qas definitely 9/11. I was a NQT and my DH in the forces, his barracks were on red alert. I truly felt war had begun! I couldn't eat or sleep.
Princess Diana as I was up early for a breakfast shift in a hotel! So many of the guests couldn't face their breakfasts and were so, I thought at the time, weirdly upset.
Weirdly i remember Kerry Katona and Brian Mcfadden splitting up and Katie Price and Leter Andre Blush i was over invested in relationships with similar timescales to mine and DH.
The most recent sickening moments are; Grenfell, Brexit and Manchester Arena.

Claracracksthenut · 17/02/2019 19:43

Diana - was doing an agency shift in a nursing home ( uni holidays) every room had it on TV kept all the old ladies very entertained all day.
9/11- Day my fathers ashes were interned. Came home put tv on and watched it all unfold. Shared grief.
7/7- was there. My train was the one coming other way so escaped. Walked into work and soon found myself in front line staff as casualty’s brought in by the back of the hospital where I was working straight from Russell square tube. ( no AE but we basically set one up in the canteen) .

ooooohbetty · 17/02/2019 20:03

Elvis dying is the first one I remember.

Stickerrocks · 17/02/2019 20:14

Cornish, late 40s

IRA Hyde Park bombing
Penlee lifeboat - my parents were out in the storm at a Christmas dinner. We had the radio on with news flashes.
Freddie Mercury
Dunblane - driving between audits. Pulled the car into a layby in horror.
Diana
9/11 - I was a few months pregnant and at work when someone mentioned that something big was happening in NY. After an hour or so I drove home and spent the day reviewing files with the TV on, wondering what on earth the world would be like a few months later when in my baby was born.

Figuregettingbigger · 17/02/2019 20:22

Princess Di, 9/11 and Kurt Cobain are the three big memories for me.

CSIblonde · 17/02/2019 20:28

Hillsborough, I was quite young, at home watching TV waiting for footie to end & wrestling to start, so saw fans helping lift each other up to balconies /using hoardings as stretchers etc so still appalled Police said they looted/were all drunk etc)
7/7
9/11
Princess Diana's death
Freddie Mercury's & George Michaels death really saddened & shook me, as both were the soundtrack to my teens

Maelstrop · 17/02/2019 20:30

9/11. I was at work, we were all free, a colleague came running in to get me. It was a surreal mine.

Diana's death, we were woken by the very loud TV in the B&B, got very annoyed at the early morning wakeup until we went down to see why it was so loud.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 17/02/2019 21:53

Margaret Thatcher’s resignation, because our science teacher came rushing down the corridor and announced, “She’s gone!” with a big grin on her face.

Then Diana, 9/11, 7/7, Brexit.

MargotSimpson · 17/02/2019 22:21
