Keeping a pet in a top floor flat with a 2 year old?

Is this just a terrible idea? The question is more aimed at cat/dog, but if you think that is a terrible idea, is there any you'd recommend?
I grew up with pets and it's been too long without them since I moved out!

Noeuf we did live in a house with a garden but had to move. We expected to live there forever, but there you go. We had to adapt. Our dog is very happy.

Possibly a bit boring for you, but how about fish? They are very soothing to watch

Also need massive tanks and a phd in water chemistry. Impossible to keep alive unless you have a semi- professional set up.

Learned that the hard way! We now have rodents in the fish tank and they are far easier!!
