To not want to leave hospital just yet?

Been in hospital 2 nights. My son (4 months) has had repeated episodes (x3) of turning blue, stopping breathing and going floppy. He also was not himself when we went to a&e and his feet kept turning blue (much bluer than you would expect). He then projectile vomited all over himself yesterday morning.

He's had a heart trace - all normal. Oxygen levels have been up and down but they blamed that on the probe on his foot. Heart rate all normal. One of his floppy episodes was yesterday whilst he was in hospital.

The doctor has been round and said it might just be one of those things, and wanted to send us home. Then he had another episode (witnessed by staff) and they kept him in.

They've said he needs a heart ultrasound and if that is normal, no further tests. I'm terrified of it happening again. They've taught me CPR just in case I need it. They want to do the ultrasound as an outpatient as they don't have space to do them over the weekend...

Would you be happy with this? Would you be happy with being sent home before the ultrasound?

I'm so scared. The first time it happened I thought he had died.

Hospital is not the safest place for well baby sylvian, or any well person. People need to realise that hospitals are places where lots of sick people are in close contact, which means that bugs can spread easily, and that's why we try to get people out of hospital as soon as possible. That means that people will be discharged from hospital before they are fully well, because you don't have to be completely better to be well enough to not be in hospital, and you can complete the 'getting better' at home. Likewise, if the hospital is confident that it isn't dangerous for you to wait for a test you need, or an operation, at home, then you don't need to be sat in a hospital bed waiting.

@Lougle thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You have explained things to me in a way that has made sense, as opposed to the doctors here who simply told me it could be a heart problem, but we will wait for the scan and learn CPR in the meantime. We are on our way home soon and your posts really helped me to decide which questions I need to ask and how to interpret the answers. Thank you for speaking sense. Still pretty terrified but I'm hoping nothing like this will ever happen again...

Glad to help, Rubica. Try to enjoy your baby, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. But be reassured that the doctors would not discharge you if they felt that it was unsafe, either. They want the best for both of you. Flowers
