Giving baby OJ in a bottle - who is BU?

Freshly squeezed! But still Confused

10 month old twins. My DM is visiting from overseas. She did the twins tea and gave them a few orange segments after their main. Twin 1 is a more advanced eater and happily sucked/ate them. Twin 2 wouldn't touch them (she's not great at feeding herself still) so DM squeezed some orange juice into a bottle and she happily drunk it. It was 2 oz if that, roughly half an orange.

This seems bonkers and I was about to get annoyed but I tried hard to be rational and I can't see what she's done wrong. Both girls had some OJ one way or another. Everyone happy.

Would this bother you? Was she being unreasonable? I should add the girls have a cold and she was making a point about giving them vitamin C.

What’s the problem? I really can’t see the issue here.

blackteasplease · 16/02/2019 22:36

I'm sure it's not the end of the world once, but I'd ask her not to to it again. She could put it in an open cup just as easily.

Absofrigginlootly · 16/02/2019 22:36

The difference with it being in a bottle is being delivered in a concentrated way to the front teeth. You’re supposed to dilute and fruit juice in a bottle with water to 1:8 juice:water ratio

PuntasticUsername · 16/02/2019 22:37

I probably wouldn't make a habit of it but as a one off, can't see a problem at all.

youbethemummylion · 16/02/2019 22:37

Not good for her teeth but also nit the end of the world as a one off.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 16/02/2019 22:37

One whiff of juice and my dc's bums were red raw.....

Bluerussian · 16/02/2019 22:38

Better in a cup than bottle but won't hurt occasionally.

MrsJayy · 16/02/2019 22:39

I really don't know what your issue is it was some orange juice your mother did nothing wrong maybe get the babies some sippy cups but honestly nothing bad happened.

LondonGirl83 · 16/02/2019 22:44

as others have said juice shouldn't go in bottles as its bad for teeth

PremierNaps · 16/02/2019 22:46

Why one whiff of juice and your DCs bums were red raw? Am I missing something?

willisurvive3under2 · 16/02/2019 22:50

I did think teeth but she has none Grin I agree that I have no rational reason to disagree with what DM did, but it doesn't seem right! They have sippy cups, I will suggest that.

What exactly is it your annoyed about? It’s orange juice not a rum punch!

MrsJayy · 16/02/2019 22:54

If she does it again dilute the juice because it is better for them but put it down to an irrational irritation and forget about it Smile

DerelictWreck · 16/02/2019 22:56

Can anyone explain how it's bad for teeth consider the teat goes past them? Surely the juice is delivered straight to the tongue?

Muddysnowdrop · 16/02/2019 22:57

Would be better in a cup than bottle, but fine and probably needed the vitamin c

MyKingdomForBrie · 16/02/2019 22:59

I think she was just being nice, it was freshly squeezed a perfectly healthy, cannot see the issue? It won't hurt teeth as a one off.

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 16/02/2019 22:59

My sister had whooping cough as a toddler, and couldn't keep milk down. She had orange juice in a bottle for a few weeks ,and it wrecked her baby teeth.

Yabbers · 16/02/2019 23:01

Not much better in a cup than a bottle, far better with a straw.

Good solution if they didn't want to eat the orange.

MrsJayy · 16/02/2019 23:03

It is to do with the concentrated juice and saliva mix it can cause tooth decay especially if used extented periods out of a baby bottle.

yearinyearout · 16/02/2019 23:06

So your DM gave the baby some OJ in a bottle, which you don't have a problem with? So what's the point of the thread? Am i missing something?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/02/2019 23:08

When mine were really small I’m sure we were told to avoid citrus fruit. Perhaps that has changed? Many babies and toddlers get upset tummies with orange juice though. I think she jumped in a bit.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 16/02/2019 23:10

Nappy rash to the bleeding stage in hours. Massive reaction.

AnnaMagnani · 16/02/2019 23:11

Not good for teeth and no good for colds. Vit C for colds has been myth-busted a zillion times.

Mmmhmmm · 16/02/2019 23:11

This is not an actual problem.

StrippingTheVelvet · 16/02/2019 23:12

Am I missing something or are you purposefully trying to find an issue with this when you can't actually see one?
