Just checking before I make a fool of myself on Facebook... this post is a lie isn't it?

I'm 100% sure we are not giving benefits to illegal immigrants because, well, they are illegal and if caught would be deported.

To think this is a lie???

used to work in a role slightly connected with the armed forces, and when I left I had to unfriend most of the people I'd added on FB who were from forces families. Their news feeds were full of Britain First and BNP stuff (it was a while ago). Some of them even "liked" the NF. I hasten to add that they weren't all like that, but it was a startling proportion.

That has honestly been my experience to. I end up keeping all my political opinions to myself because I'm in the minority and I also am not knowledgable enough to be able to argue my points well enough if it turned into a debate.

I know a fair few military and ex military and sadly I am not surprised by that attitude

PinkGin24 · 16/02/2019 20:17

YouTheCat, whether or not it is right/wrong to give benefits to asylum seekers who have already passed through safe countries is an opinion.

Curlyshabtree · 16/02/2019 20:19

Those who are here and working illegally are often paying emergency tax which means ironically they contribute more. I know this doesn’t apply to those working cash in hand.

Monkeybusiness2 · 16/02/2019 20:22

Many of the people I was at school with (We left when I was about 15 and I went abroad and moved around a lot) are posting these things. They still live in their town, have married each other and have probably never been to London. In fact many of them have probably never even spoken to an 'immigrant' let alone seen an illegal one!
Unfortunately most of them still don't know the difference between 'there' and 'their' at 40 odd either.

LinoleumBlownapart · 16/02/2019 20:23

illegal immigrants have no recourse to public funds and you can go even further because even LEGAL immigrants have no recourse to public funds, only citizens and of those citizens, those married to legal immigrants lose their right to claim any public funds. So it's total bollocks!

WhatTheNightBrings · 16/02/2019 20:29

have probably never been to London.

Hahahaha. What is this supposed to indicate?

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/02/2019 20:31

Monkey
Yes this is the problem, people, who’ve had little contact with foreigners or with people (usually different ethnicity), whose families came to the U.K., maybe generations ago.

My family is like this. I live near a city, which is white minority. My sibling and wife moved to an area of the country very specifically to just see white faces. They told me openly without blinking and my mouth dropped.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/02/2019 20:37

Just as a matter of interest, substitute the words 'public assistance' or 'welfare' for 'benefits, and the same memes are abounding here in the US.

Sad, isn't it? But ignorance knows no boundaries.

KickAssAngel · 16/02/2019 20:39

It's also the way that "illegal" is often linked to "immigrant" as if being an immigrant is actually an illegal act, and all immigrants are dangerous law breakers.

I'm an immigrant - a white person who moved to the US. You have no idea how much that can disturb people when I point that out.

Cheeeeislifenow · 16/02/2019 20:43

Well in Ireland People seeking asylum live in direct provision while they wait. It can take years one woman is waiting 12 years. They live in converted hotels and get euro 19.8 per week for spending money.
Those people aren't illegal but awaiting asylum. I think if you begrudge someone twenty euro per week who is also not even allowed to do paid work then that's pretty tight of you.
Not you specifically but you in general.

IDoN0tCare · 16/02/2019 20:43

This might be of help, OP, if you’d like to respond to the ignorant, racist arseholes.

fullfact.org/news/illegal-immigrants-cant-claim-benefits/

Yabbers · 16/02/2019 20:49

Ahh yes. Schroedingers immigrant. Taking our jobs and scrounging our benefits.

@PinkGin24 Go and read up on what happens to the immigrants who stop in the first "safe" country they come to.

That system is broken. It means Countries like Greece, Turkey, Jordan have to cope with large numbers of asylum seekers. And countries like Britain, Sweden, Norway needn't take any. That is plainly wrong.

Monkeybusiness2 · 16/02/2019 20:51

Mummyoflittledragon - I have 3 mixed race children now. We came to SW England (fairly rural) about 3 years ago. We're just about to move out again precisely because of this. :( . It really is just ignorance tbh.
I've met so many wonderful people on my travels from all sorts of different countries and the tragedy is that people fail to understand they are just human like us.

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/02/2019 20:57

Monkey
I’m sorry to hear that. Sad I hope your children haven’t been too badly hurt.

I lived in Germany for a while and the area I lived there were very few non white faces. Just a very stoic population in the area. I enjoyed living there but also found it strange tbh. I learnt German in a class setting so naturally met people from all different nationalities on my course. I found this interesting. Enriching.

Monkeybusiness2 · 16/02/2019 21:04

Mummyoflittledragon Flowers Isn't it funny how different we grow up from our siblings and parents. Mine have all been very accepting (luckily) but my father also used to go on a bit like this tbh and my mum still comes out with stuff I cringe at sometimes!

Thecabbageassasin · 16/02/2019 21:11

Yep to military thing. I have old time friend that posts this kind of shit she’s ex military and seems to be getting progressively more racist, to the point I slowly phased her from my life.

SusanWalker · 16/02/2019 21:23

My ex is an immigrant and could not claim anything for a long time, and because I was married to him, neither could I. People really should educate themselves before making up stupid memes. That's assuming it's not meant to be deliberately misleading.

Is it just me or does anyone else find it quite disturbing that, anecdotally at least, serving members of the army are buying into all this Tommy Robinson crap. If there was a national emergency (like no deal brexit) and the armed forces were being used to prevent rioting or something, then I would find it worrying that a proportion of them were prejudiced against people they might perceive as immigrants.

GraceMarks · 16/02/2019 21:53

Amongst the Army families I knew, the ones most likely to share these sorts of memes were those who had been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. I'm not in any way excusing prejudice and racism, but I wonder if they have been encouraged to "other" or dehumanise people who are Muslim and are more susceptible to anti-Islam memes as a result.

Thehop · 16/02/2019 21:56

Illegals can’t claim

Sheeple like to share though

Walkingdeadfangirl · 16/02/2019 23:08

I am surprised at the ignorance on MN. Of course illegal immigrants claim benefits. What do you think they live on? Once in the UK, they are entitled to the full help of the state, very few are deported. No such thing as 'automatic' deportation.

All they need to do is claim asylum, destroy their documents and get coaching from left wing charities on how to beat the system. That is why we are ending up with 30yo adults in our children's school classrooms.

Curlyshabtree · 16/02/2019 23:23

Erm....no, they can’t. Illegal immigrants by their very nature cannot claim anything and live very much under the radar. Refugees do have help, but these folk are not here illegally, there’s a massive difference. Wish people would understand this.
For context I married an illegal immigrant who has never claimed anything, even when his status was legal - big stamp in his passport stating no recourse to public funds.
I have also volunteered with a refugee charity (who did not have any political affiliation) and learnt a lot about the dreadful situations people were in.

SusanWalker · 16/02/2019 23:53

If you are awaiting an asylum decision then you are not here illegally.

I met someone once who had been here illegally. She came in on a visa and overstayed by two years. When she left she was told she would never be allowed back in, but I don't think she was too bothered. There was no way she could have claimed benefits as you would have to show your passport, with an expired visa in it.

frumpety · 17/02/2019 07:45

Oh dear fangirl , there are :

Illegal immigrants -people very much under the radar of the system who claim nothing

Legal immigrants - people who are here because they have been allowed to come and who work here, some may claim benefits as a result of a reciprocal agreement with other countries and some who become British citizens and are therefore entitled to claim as you can.

Asylum seekers - these people are given something to live on and somewhere to live in, whilst their claim is progressing. They are not allowed to work during the process.

Are you suggesting that we should stop allowing people to claim asylum ?
