Would you pay for your dc to fly business class?

Just that really. DS and his friend are going on their big gap year holiday, and the other boys parents have paid for them both to travel in Business class. It is a 14 hour flight.

Would you ever do that? I just really hope he doesn't get a taste for it.

No bloody way. I would not pay it for myself... parallel universe anyone?

Aurea · 16/02/2019 21:12

Never. Although we could afford it, it would never even cross my mind for me or my DCs.

famousfour · 16/02/2019 21:17

Travelling with me - yes. On a gap year. No. Part of the point is roughing it and making your own way.

givemesteel · 16/02/2019 22:31

By the way OP, Gordon Ramsay doesn't fly his kids in business class, they fly economy so they don't grow up to be spolit and entitled. I respect him for that.

Oh, and by far the biggest twerp I know grew up with her parents paying for business class flights and now won't fly 'coach'.

thenightsky · 16/02/2019 22:37

God almighty NO!

I have my 60th birthday this year and I've agonised over whether to book premier seats for the first time ever in my life! (extra £340)

Yep, I know one of those!

Hollowvictory · 17/02/2019 07:29

No. No. No.
It's their gap year let them pay for it and sort it out.
Ridiculous.
You work a whole week to pay for it? "why can't HE work a week to pay for it.
Do not do this. Bloody ridiculous

LilaJude · 17/02/2019 07:32

I would have thought they would much prefer to have cheaper flights and the extra couple of grand as spending money tbh.

overandunder9 · 17/02/2019 07:45

It will cost you a week’s wages? For most people, a business class ticket to travel that distance would be several months’ wages. If I could afford to upgrade for a week’s wages.... yep I would.

JenniferJareau · 17/02/2019 07:50

I just really hope he doesn't get a taste for it.

You do though. Once you've turned left on boarding a flight it can be hard to go back to turning right.

moonfacebaby · 17/02/2019 07:52

Absolutely no way! Even if I had the money...

I think it sets their expectations way too high. I see it with DD1’s peers (she’s 13). Kids getting the latest iPhone, extortionately expensive make-up palettes, money thrown at them and top quality everything...

Besides, I’ve never flown business class and I’ll be damned if my child will get that before me!

And it’s a gap year - surely better to spend that money on the travelling experiences they will be doing?

GreenandBlueButterfly · 17/02/2019 07:58

The other parents probably have more airmiles than they know what to do with, and decided to treat the children. I think it's fine.

Airmiles accumulate extremely quickly if you are a frequent flyer and use a BA Amex for everything (which I do). In the end, you have to do something with those miles!

ooooohbetty · 17/02/2019 08:07

No. Never. If they wanted to do that they'd have to pay the extra themselves.

If I was going to give them something towards the trip I would give it to them to choose what to do with or buy some sort of treat that they wouldn't otherwise be able to do eg an excursion to an island or a helicopter trip or something on those lines. Generous of them , though.

There’s something wrong with his parenting if theyd grow up spoilt and entitled.

Personally, I think he’s just tight and couldn’t be bothered his arse with them on the flight.

I have read this exact thread before! Everything about it was the same - the boys on the gap year

Spot on. I also though I’d read it before.
